Before he could say anything, Nico’s voice cut through the static.
“Bohol. New Year’s. Come with me.”
In the background, there was noise—music playing softly, the clink of bottles, and a voice he hadn’t heard in years but recognized instantly.
EJ didn’t answer right away. He glanced at his own reflection in the bathroom mirror—tired eyes, a wrinkled dress shirt, a loosened tie. He’s supposed to have his life together. Like someone who wouldn’t say yes to an impulsive, drunken invitation from an ex.
He shouldn’t.
But—
“…Okay.”
EJ sighed.
What the hell did he just agree to?

Hindi agad sumagot si EJ. Napatingin siya sa sarili sa salamin ng banyo—pagod na mga mata, kupas na long sleeves, maluwag na tie. Matino na dapat buhay niya. Yung hindi lang basta-basta magpapadala sa lasing na ex na nagyayaya sa biglaang lakad pa-Bohol.
Dapat hindi.

Napabuntong-hininga na lang si EJ.
Ano ba ‘tong pinapasok niyang ‘to?

Harua tilted his head, ears poking out from beneath his gray hoodie. “You’re gripping that milk carton like it owes you money.”
“I am calm. I am at peace,” Nico insisted. “Just... if he ends up with someone else who is Not Me, I will go so batshit insane they’ll have to carry me off campus in a straightjacket. But like—quietly. With dignity.”
“Or,” Harua said, patting his shoulder, “you could maybe tell him you like him. Like a regular person. With a voice. And words. And get this over with. Shoot your shot, right?”
Nico groaned. “Ugh. Why use words when I could just suffer artistically on my own instead?”
Harua sighed. “Sheesh.”

The hallway outside Mr. K’s office felt like the inside of a held breath. Everyone was waiting for the cast list. Everyone was pretending not to care while also caring far too much.
Nico leaned against the opposite wall, bouncing his pencil against the bulletin board frame in a weak rhythm. Across the corridor, Yuma stood rigid beside the trophy cabinet, arms folded, pretending to scroll through his phone. He hadn’t looked at Nico once since walking in. Eight months of pretending everything was “fine,” and this was still what they did: not looking, not talking, pretending nothing was wrong.
Maki whispered to Taki, “Place your bets. Nico. Yuma. Who’s gonna come out on top this time?”
“Neither if we’re talking about tops.” Taki snickered.
Harua, crouched by the vending machine, whispered back, “I’m betting bloodshed for sure.”
