Claire’s hand went to the mirroring spot on her own forehead, belatedly remembering the band-aid. A flush bloomed, crawling up her neck to her cheeks. “Ha-ha,” she said.
Thankfully, he turned to look through the one-way glass, and Claire turned to look with him. Sherry had given up on the television for now and was lying back on her pillows, staring at the ceiling. “How’s Sherry?”

There is a man at the Flowering Tree.
He is tall, lean but not reedy. There is confidence in the lines of his body, even though he is obviously in unfamiliar surroundings; his shoulders are straight, his posture perfect (Elmyra corrects her own). His hand rests easily on the pommel of his sword in a gesture that is more unconscious than threatening. There is something on his armor, a sigil that she cannot recognize. Beside the greens and blues and purples and and browns of the Flowering Tree, he is a small flame: his skin burnished gold, shimmering in the light from the nearby cooking fire; his hair a wavy shock of brilliant red.
A flush crawls its way up Elmyra’s neck. She thinks, Hm.
