“I look…” Absentmindedly, he relinquished his hold on one of her sides, gloved hands lifting to prod as the underside of his eye, watching with twisting lips and an arching brow at the slight pull at his skin served only to make the shimmering pinks of his eyelids glitter more. “Stupid.”

“Congratulations!” Caine bellowed cheerfully, tossing an old-fashioned camera over his shoulder and fanning the residual polaroid between his thumb and forefinger.
He paused only for a second to admire the resulting still. Blissfully unperturbed by the fact it immortalized the image of Jax’s hands rung tight around Cupid’s neck. Or that cartoonishly obvious bite marks littered his forearms. Or that neither were paying any mind to the camera’s lens, wide, disturbed eyes fixed to the bundle of babies that had been unceremoniously bestowed upon them.
“What a beautiful family,” he gushed, flicking a beady tear from his eye, before he clapped his hands together, and suddenly, everything they’d grown used to over the course of ten minutes sank into the void of the in-between.
“And now, you get to live in domestic bliss as man and housewife in a beautiful, utopian suburbia,” Caine declared, hand clutched over his heart as his other arm gestured widely to the newly formed rows of picket fences and colorful houses. “As nature intended.”
He was met with silence and stares.
But then, voice tilting with petulant delight, Cupid suggested;
“I vote we make Jax the housewife.”

She really should have been watching the movie. He’d paid for the tickets, had parked them in a prime spot to catch every colorful frame and wonderfully orchestrated detail of the film’s soundscapes. He’d even gone to the bother of stuffing his car’s trunk with blankets and pillows so that they could cuddle up within the little nest he’d forged.
But he had a face made for television. A face made to be seen by the masses and admired by the many.
And, just like the vast majority of audience members and sycophants alike, she too found her gaze magnetized to the shadowed face of her boyfriend.
