He had a pounding migraine, the day off in the port mafia had left him with absolutely nothing to do: so he did what he does best, he drowned himself in alcohol and pills. It was peacefully mind numbing for a while, but the worst thing about distractions is they keep your problems at bay, but not out of sight.
It's like watching the reaper with his rotting sickle watch you, never out of sight, but temporarily out of reach. The most common advice in situations like these was to man up and face the situation - take the bull by its horns. That's just plain stupid.
It's the kind of thing Chuuya would do.
He'd always admired Chuuya for his sheer drive. There was a light behind Chuuyas eyes you don't often find in people, the fire of ambition, of passion. Dazai truly envied him. All he ever wanted in life was purpose. Ambition would help him, and it's not like he didn't have ambition, it's just that his ambition happened to be directed in trying to kill himself.

It was disgusting what proximity could do to a person, absolutely disgusting how if brought close enough together you'd see the curves of another's body, see the pores on their skin and the scars that did not hide too well under their sleeves.
It was disgusting, Fyodor to reminded himself.
"Would you have taken me?", Dazai asked with uncharacteristic candor. His honey-brown eyes expressed an emotion in a language that Fyodor was all too familiar with.
"Of course. I'm not a fool." His answer carried conviction he wasn't aware he could provide. Then again, all his answers changed when Dazai asked the questions.
Dazai didn't say anything. He was probably trying to see where the boundary between them lay, or if there was one at all.

And just like that, he’s gone. He throws a wave behind his shoulder and calls out, “I think we’ll get along just fine, Dazai-kun. After all, we have all the time in the world to pick each other apart.”

Algebra in general had only been a relatively recent invention. Sure, way back then, people were unfathomably smart. But anything more complex than arithmetic was reserved solely for specialists and intellectuals of the era.
So then, why wouldn't that be the case in Re:Zero?
Historically, "math" and "tedium" often gone hand in hand, given the lack of modern symbolic representation. In fact, negative numbers were only a thing in 200 BCE - roughly 2800 years after records of earliest civilization.

Briefly, a look rushed over Dazai Osamu’s face— an emotion so quick, Chuuya couldn’t put a name to it. Then, his face mellowed out into a smile that had Chuuya itching for a fight; that screamed I think I’m the smartest person in the room, with just enough smugness and condescension to really rile him up.
“No,” Dazai said and looked weirdly vulnerable, like he was admitting some big secret. “No, you don’t.”
Or: the fight against the DOA ends badly for everyone involved. Now, the only person capable of ending everything before it even happens, would rather be dead and buried alongside his friends than deal with time travel of all things. Worse, when whatever adverse reaction No Longer Human had to the book has burned Dazai off the timeline as a whole.
