canon-divergence sparked by the thought of "what if rumi really *did* lose her markings?" and also contemplating how rumi has definitely contemplated her own death a lot more than that one scene, then choosing the most painful possible option for those questions.

mind the tags, but i have also tagged a lot out of an abundance of caution <3this was supposed to be short, and it was also supposed to be posted xmas day, and i'm zero for two. however! this is probably one of the things i'm most pleased with that i've written all year. genuinely absolutely thrilled to have gotten ell for my giftee, big thanks to HerkimerAurora for letting me drop snips in their DMs because i could not drop as many in the marmila server as usual, and *also* for helping me narrow down the initial idea!
i kicked around "golden heart is bad actually" months ago and it has lived in my prompts list ever since, with me occasionally eyeing it and then deciding i didn't have the right ideas. well. i happened to get the exact right person to send the ideas spinning, and it uhhhh got a little out of hand!

When Straka took the Kingfisher, it did not swallow the ship whole. Marya could not look away, would not look away, as Comfrey pulled her out of danger and onto the deck of the Zephyr. Comfrey robbed her of her rightful fate alongside the one her crew and her ship and Ludmila did not deserve, and if she could not go down with them, she woud at least bear witness.
The beast bit her beautiful, sparkling ship in half, leaving its stern and crew to fall into the ocean below as it consumed the bow. She had assumed it was incinerated whole by the crow's furnace.
How much of it was reshaped into the door that led her back to Ludmila?
Chewing her lip anxiously, Ludmila offers her open palm, and there in the middle lays a gleaming pendant carved into a feather, split evenly down the middle, one side of the shaft brilliant cobalt and the other a shimmering fire-orange.

She asks, too, about the scar in the center of Marya's palm. The one that is not quite healed and looks a bit worse for wear, jagged and angry, but does not seem to hurt her as much as would be expected. When Marya cannot answer her, she does not push. She will learn it later, when Marya is ready — and if she is never ready, that too will be okay.
She does, however, press her lips against the back of Marya's hand, lingering just shy of the wound edge. It looks like it went clean through, at one point. When she glances up, mouth still against the skin, Marya's gaze is so, so soft.

The client hadn’t really requested anything at all; their emails had been almost overly polite, if not jarringly formal, and had selected only the most vanilla options on the questionnaire she provided. Certainly a far cry from the standard practices of her usual clientele, but this one had paid upfront and picked this expensive hotel, and Mira’s fees are dear enough on their own that she had been coloured intrigued.
Mira takes a left down the hallway after leaving the elevator and finds herself at the door to the room. She doesn’t steel herself—doesn’t need to. She can handle anything. Has handled most things. Mira swipes the keycard and lets herself in.
The person sitting on the bed is probably the last thing she expects.
In which Mira is a professional, Rumi is socially inept, and Zoey is also there. Let's hope nobody catches feelings.
