“Atoned?” Matt says incredulously. He hand spasms on Dex’s neck like he’s physically restraining himself from painting the walls with his brain matter. Dex is dizzy with the prolonged contact, the drag of leather between the cartilage rings of his windpipe. The pain feels like absolution.

Even more so gazing at the flame that was Aerion. Burning hotter and hotter still as he stood firm against the eyes that seemed to swallow him whole.

The stairwell is chilly and quiet. Neither speaks and Dunk’s heart pounds in his ears. He wonders if Lyonel can hear it, echoing off the cold, dark stone. Up and up they go, higher into the tower. and Dunk wonders if they’re going to the roof so Lyonel can throw him off into the sea. He wonders if it would hurt to hit the waves, or if he would die on impact. Were I a bird or a fish, this would not be a problem, as I would just fly or swim away. Were Egg a dragon, he would catch me.

It felt like an age before his eyes fell upon Dunk’s face, searching his dirtied cheeks and the blue of his eyes as if watching the clouds and consulting the weather, or checking the sky for signs of some foul sort of omen. When their eyes met at last, Aerion’s cockiness fell from his features swiftly as if Dunk had backhanded it from his face. His swagger faltered, and then his hackles were up, his lips pulling into a snarl.
“I shall withdraw my accusation if the oaf swears an oath of fealty to me and becomes my sworn sword.”

“I see you there, you know,” the alpha calls out to Aerion. “Are you the stable boy?”
Aerion’s eye twitches at the mere thought of him being a stable boy. This man, honestly, what a brute to assume such a thing.
He wants nothing more than to bite the alpha’s head off, but instead, he just settles for biting his lip to keep his anger at bay. He cannot draw attention to himself.
“No,” Aerion snaps at the brute, readjusting the hood of his cloak to make sure it stays on and conceals his hair. “Leave.”
He cannot let anyone see it, lest he wants to be returned to his father.
“Nothing to be ashamed of if you are,” the alpha tries to placate him. “It’s a decent job to have.”
Then, to Aerion’s horror and annoyance, the alpha tosses him a coin, one that proceeds to land by Aerion’s feet.
aerion runs away to escape an arranged marriage and ends up meeting a brute of an alpha at a stable, out of all places.
