Summary

“Please,” Law begs, his voice splintering. “Just kill me.”
The soldier ignores his plea, tightening the tourniquet and brushing packed snow from Law’s boots and uniform.
“Please,” Law tries again, his words crumble into a sob, rattling in his throat like lead pressed against his esophagus.
“Shh,” the soldier hushes him and smacks his hands together, knocking off the lingering snow. He stands to brush off his knees, and Law can finally get a good look at him. He appears enormous, towering over Law like a titan, but Law has faced enough men in this war to realize that this soldier is shorter than most. His winter layers flow with a movement that suggests they are a size too large on him, and Law imagines scrawny arms and legs underneath.
“I will help you,” he says calmly.

“No, Ilya, they can hear us not sleep,” Shane leans forward, searching Ilya’s face. Almost. “What we do before we sleep.”
And Shane knows he gets it, because his whole face lights up, and Shane isn’t really in the position to appreciate it fully because the context is just not allowing him to. And it makes him feel worse. “Ah, that!” Ilya is laughing, and he presses down on Shane’s neck more solidly, shaking him around a little, almost proud if Shane had to guess.
