“Avert your eyes, Jacob,” Jack suggested as he slid his hand downward to Sam’s hip and tugged, shifting her easily onto his lap. To her credit, she only looked shocked instead of uncomfortable.
“I’ll let it slide this time, but only because I know you love her,” Jacob dismissed.
“Yes, Sir, I do,” Jack added, and with a flash of Sam’s blue eyes, he wondered if he had said too much. The truth was that he did love her. Not some other version of her, but her. He loved this Sam who hurt and cried and missed the husband she loved. Maybe that’s why he had sounded so convincing. Maybe that was why she looked frightened.

Just a quick in and out, possibly swiping some technology on the way. Easy. Except it's SG-1. Of course easy isn't in their vocabulary.

Forcing open a half-swollen eye, and rolling back slightly, wincing at the pain in her ribs, Sam looked up to see her father staring down at her, worry lining every inch of his face.

She knew she shouldn’t have allowed the whole thing to drift all the way to Christmas Eve, for there had always been a tacit understanding (more or less enforced by a few sharp words and a lot of sudden disappearances to Minnesota) that he was not to be disturbed on the 25th of December except on government business. But the 24th…?
The doorbell rang.

Did she really have the courage to continue what she started? Could she finish that conversation she was awkwardly having when she received the news about her father?

“Thank you,” he countered, and his eyes went up when he felt her soft fingers take hold of his. She shot him a questioning look in return, and he cleared his throat, accepting that they needed to do this if they were going to look remotely convincing for her brother.
“I was thinking we should probably...” she trailed off, running her thumb across his palm, and from his fingers to his shoulder he buzzed at the sensation. “I know it’s awkward to talk about, but I was thinking...”
“So, let’s not talk about it. Let’s just...” he exhaled slowly, readying himself to kiss her. Carter. He was going to kiss Carter. Probably repeatedly, and then they were never going to talk about it again after this weekend. It wasn’t like he hadn’t kissed her before, but this was different.

“I just— I can’t help wondering, If just one thing had been different, would everything be different now?” She finally got out. She didn’t know if she actually wanted an answer to that question or not.
