Still half-leaned over the desk, she watched Isha’s knees lock and knew that the girl was tensing to spring up as she ducked out from under the desk. What she didn’t realize was that she was too early. It was too far of a reach for Jinx, who could see the impending collision in her mind's eye, but that didn’t stop her from trying anyway.
Then—just before Isha’s head could knock into the underside of the desks edge—Ekko’s hand shot out, cupping the wood and cushioning the back of Isha’s head when she rose. She bumped into him, startled, and blinked. Ekko maintained his easy grin as Isha climbed out, and once she was in the clear, lifted his hand to ruffle her hair.
“Careful,” he chastised lightly as Isha batted his hands away.

There was silence except for the rain. She knew she wasn’t making any sense, but how could anybody possibly understand? She barely understood it herself. It made her happy to see that look in his eyes, and that was terrifying. It went against every instinct she'd spent years cultivating as she wove in and out of the shadows of Ketterdam. It went against everything she’d had to do to survive.

What starts as an evening of playful teasing turns into a battle with complicated feelings for Inej, but Kaz manages to find the right words to say.

“Coffee?” she asks. Kaz nods, and mumbles something that sounds like a thanks. When Inej smiles, she feels it in every part of her body. After a quick brush against his knuckles, Inej pulls herself from her bed and feels the cold air on her skin; she grabs a shirt and slips it on over her vest before heading out.

Trying to keep her ship steady while at sea kept her distracted enough, during these storms. She had to worry about bigger things than old memories, things already passed. She had an entire crew of people under her command, depending on her to keep them afloat."

Inej sees Tante Heleen at a gala in Ravka, wrapped in finery.
To an untrained observer, at least. Inej can tell that Heleen’s wrap and dress are at least a decade out of fashion; and no amount of artful mending can disguise the fact her dress looks like the mice and moths have been chewing on the edges. Heleen herself looks like she’s seen better days; her once-golden hair is showing dark roots, there are lines around her mouth and eyes that no amount of powders and paint can disguise.

Nikolai invites Kaz Brekker to the Little Palace to assess security risks. This is widely regarded as a bad move by many.There is a ball, a lost--stolen--invitation and Inej in a ballgown. And a well-placed axe here and there.

The Barrel was his teacher, and Kaz Brekker was a quick student.
But there are lessons the crime-riddled slums of Kerch simply can’t teach the boy who crawled out of her harbor.
