It's not like Purple knows either. Did—what, did some deep, instinctual part of Purple's soul know that Red was going to save them? No, that's not true.
They had stalled for them anyway. You know, just because. Really, didn't hurt not to.
"Hah, yeah, then we just had to go and survive. Both of us," Red chuckles. The phrase trails off, before they correct it with a perky "—alive."
"Yeah," Purple agrees faintly. "Uh huh."
"What are we even gonna do?" Red asks like it's a joke (a grin in the sound of their voice) but they both know it's not.
"I don't fucking know!" Purple laughs.

Derek's jaw dropped. "You're kidding. There is no way that meeting me is more interesting than literally anything else you do." Derek didn't even know how to unpack the last bit of what Avery said.
"Nuh uh uh." Avery stuck his hand in Derek's face to wag his finger at him. Derek just scrunched his nose. "Buddy, trust me, you are the root of it all. You are why I'm here."
"That's…" Derek took in a shaky breath, deliberately and slowly letting it out. This was a fact Avery made obvious from the beginning, yet it was one he did not understand at all. "What do you mean by that?"
"It means," and oh, Avery is taking his hands now, grinning quite fondly, and the way the starlight glow washes over his proud expression makes it all look quite hazy, "my desire to save you broke the universe."
or: Derek and Avery get their sleepover. Derek has questions. Avery has very confusing, rambly answers. Derek considers it debatably awful exposition.

Red shifts again, nervous. Purple’s so tense. “I was lonely.” They confess, even though it was something Red wouldn’t have said on their own.
Purple starts stroking Red’s back, running their hand slowly up and down it, soothingly so. “Yeah?” They keep their voice low, as soft as Purple’s voice can get. Which usually wasn’t much soft at all.
Red was cute. Purple wouldn’t usually admit this either, but when they aren’t running their mouth and being a jerk to them, they’re quite cute. Purple leans their head against Red’s. Red seems to relax further as Purple does so.
“Yeah.” They repeat Purple, voice just as soft.
AKA: Red is lonely, and Purple is available.

He saw how his shoulders flinch when Avery yelled— then the guilt forming in his face when he must had realized that he had to force him out of the platform.
The need to protect, the way his eyes started to faintly water like Avery's.
The split moment of the gentle touch Derek had near his chest, giving Avery a different thought for just a second— before he felt his heart drop when the sudden pain from Derek's force struck.
Derek must had wanted to bring Avery home the gentle way, and Avery replayed that scene in his head over and over again.

The two are together again, and Avery needs some help calming down after the whole ordeal.

During it, details that escaped him, for he is fixed on his plate of Hamburger Helper, his little sister Hannah soaks in like a sponge cleaning a mess: their mom, mouth opening to say something, then shutting so fast Hannah thinks she hears the thunk of teeth, then opening again; their dad, staring at Nath like a stranger who’s wandered in through the back door and sat down at the table; and Nath himself, fingers curling tighter and tighter around his fork until Hannah fears it might snap in two.
At the thirty-third second, Nath finally says something. “I just—” his voice strains out of him in a thin line “—thought you should know.”
Everything Nath Lee never told his parents about his relationship with the boy across the street.
