On his twenty-first birthday, he puts on his best shirt and his nicest tie and walks into a bar alone to practice.
He does not practice. He sits in the corner for five hours and talks honestly to a stranger for the first time in his life, and somewhere between the drink he hated and the one he didn't, jazz, cherry stems, and the walk home, something shifts.
