“Dennis,” Dr. Eddy says, still writing, still smiling. “I want you to take some work home with you from this session.” She finally looks up at him and nods encouragingly. Dennis can’t help the way his eyes roll all the way back into his head.
“Great,” he mutters.
“I want you to track your impulses,” she says. “I want you to track your impulses and I want you to put the intention behind that impulse in one of two categories.”
She stands, goes to her desk. She opens a drawer and pulls out a second notebook. She opens it to the first page and begins to write in it. Then, she comes to Dennis, stops right in front of him and presents the journal to him, still opened.
She’s drawn a table. A question looms at the top of the page: What is my intention with this action? And there are only two columns. One labeled growth and the other: stagnation.

Sidney looks mortified by the thought. It reminds Charlie that he's a freakazoid, and that Sidney's one of the normal ones. Frankly, that's good. That's great. She can grow up and be kinda alright, and she won't be inhaling paint thinner at three in the morning in the bar basement until she vomits, and she won't drink alone in a pub bathroom because she's a stalker and she knows it's wrong, and she won't huddle in a high school broom closet and drink bleach and hope maaaybe it kills him, or at the very least gives Mac enough fear of losing his best friend that he sleeps on the floor between Charlie's bed and the bedroom door.
Nah, Sid's gonna be fine. She makes faces at eating bugs.

On the first day of third grade, things changed forever. The stars aligned, Mac and Charlie met, and that was it. They were best friends forever right away. Like, for real. None of that teen movie bullshit though, they were both way too badass for that. No, they roamed the streets to find cool shit, they got high in Charlie’s basement, and they were both total party boys from the very beginning.
(And yeah, Mac helped Charlie find quiet dark places when he was freaking out and Charlie didn’t tell anyone when Mac needed to get a cry out and they always made sure neither of them ever got lonely, but two bros supporting each other was pretty badass too.)

Men like us," he bit his lip, looking down at the table. "We don't get to just kill ourselves, Charlie, it doesn't work like that."
