The Letters

Summary:

Dear Dean

So you have no one? How come you lie like this? You seem to have totally forgotten that you have a husband at home. You said 'I will be right back' and just left. As I kept waiting at home for your return, now my parents have started to question your faithfulness. No wonder, they had already warned me about you. That this army man wouldn't come back but alas I still married you so I guess I would just have to bear this longing. Don't miss me too much okay?

Yours Castiel

Dean receives a letter in a sack full of letters but finds one a little odd. And he comes to love that odd.

Chapter Text

In the burning heat of the Sinai desert, 3 soldiers crawled over the sand with AK-47s. One of them positioned himself right behind the Mazari Palm and hooked his gun to see through for the target.

"Dean, Captain's on line."

He motioned with his hand as his partner crawled over to him passing him the handset, a creaky voice came in "Lieutenant, do you see the target?"

"Yes sir. There are 5 males and 2 females coming towards the base with 4 mules."

He looked the binoculars at the men who were wading through the trees, he noticed red clothes wrapped around the legs of the mules which made him stop short. "Sir, they are locals."

"How do you know?"

"The cloth on their legs, the villagers usually put it around their cultural festivals."

"They could be terrorists. Shoot em' "

He growled at the order as he gave the handset back to the soldier next to him, who listened to the rest of the conversation as the voice shouted over the phone. "Sir, what should we do?"

He looked to his right at the black man who waited for the orders, there was the Captain's shout again "I said shoot them" Dean set his gun as he stared at the oncomers through the lens, taking a breath in he shot at the tree right above the men who quickly stated running away scared as the other two soldiers also followed his lead.

He saw Captain Lucifer running with other members down the slope as the dust settled. Lucifer got close to the mule with suspicious moments before he punctured the pouch with his knife and rice started falling through the rip.

Dean stood up from his hiding spot with others as he slid towards where the soldiers were checking the men for any weapons, they cleared up the normal civilians "Sir, they are clear." He came beside Lucifer as he said lowly "Sorry Sir, I couldn't aim properly. Heatstroke"

He saw Lucifer's jaw clench but didn't comment on it as one of the civilians started "We have brought food since the heatwave has been up for 15 days." Dean smiled at the individual before he stood up straight at Lucifer's voice "I want a written explanation on my desk by tomorrow, Lieutenant."

*******************

Dean bit the flesh of the mutton as he sat on the Kathiya with his plate beside his friend who said "You scored a point with the civilians but Lucifer doesn't look happy."

He looked at his friend with a shrug "You know him, Benny, when I apologized to him he shooed me away with the order to go and eat." His friend snickered as he ate rice with his hands "Trust me brotha, jealousy stinks off of him." He ignored his friend's comment to focus more on gaining back his protein.

He sat on a turned-over fruit basket along with the other soldiers after they had been called back to the barracks by Major Singer. He had found from an informant that the area that they had secured had 5 people from the assailant group infiltrating as normal civilians.

"So Captain, put your best soldiers on the mission."

Lucifer nodded as he called out the names "Victor, Gadreel, Ezekiel, Abaddon, Ketch and Mick."

"Alright then, bring these boys in then."

Dean turned to the Captain with a scathing look which went ignored as the man stood up and turned to leave. He stood up himself to follow back outside with the others moving after him, Benny said from beside him "First time I am seeing Lucifer being jealous of Michael, it's usually the other way."

The mission was carried out and also posted on the paper the very next day, calling them out to be cold blooded murders who kills childrens. Dean threw the paper on the table with a curse as he prowled around the bunker "I knew it, they were trying to get the civilians against us."

Victor assessed him as he asked "Sir, what do we do now?" Scratching his cheek he replied "We have to look for that informant."

Dean was in a plaid shirt and jeans as he directed his team moving between the streets "Go ask around for Lester. Don't push, things are already heated up here." They all went to different directions in set of two. He noticed the silence around the mud roads bordered by houses, he mentioned to Benny "It seems like they have put in a curfew themselves."

He saw an open door and went there to see it was a store, he recognised the face from one of the men who had delivered food to him, Asa. With a friendly smile he addressed the man putting his foot over the small threshold near the door "Hello there."

Benny followed his lead as he asked "Would you mind sharing some tea with us, brotha?"

The man did not look at them as he let out in venom filled voice "We don't talk to people from Zion's Army. Now get out before we also start pelting you with stones."

He stopped Benny with his hand when the man looked ready to lunge "What did you say?" The man shouted back "Get out before I call the mob." They moved their hands up in surrender, Benny snarked as they backed away from the house "What the fuck? He was offering up food that day but now wants us to drop dead." Dean shook his head "It's not their fault man, it is all because of that asshole Asmodeus."

They were quickly joined by rest of the soldiers who informed that no one was ready to speak and the streets were empty. With a frustrated growl, they all started searching for any civilian.

Dean stopped when he heard the muffled sound of talking,  his team haulted a little ahead of him noticing the Lieutenant was moving in the direction of a hunched mud door. Ducking his head he followed the murmurs, with agile steps he got inside the little cottage where he saw a radio strung up and the voice coming through it.

"...we have to take back what's rightfully ours, they have taken away our children. So we will take away theirs, destroy the Shedim. Hail to The Abyss."

"Shit."

He was moving before he knew it as he gave the orders "We have to secure the area now."

*********************

Dean leaped out of the jeep before it could stop and strided towards Shedim where a rally was going on, people celebrating their local festival with a joyous sight unaware of what someone has planned for them. "Sir, they will be here any time. How do we secure the place now?" Abaddon asked as she circled around the place filled with people.

Victor suggested "Let's inform them all."

Shaking his head he replied "No, that's too much of a risk. Both villages are close by it will start a riot if they got know who is behind this."

"We should evacuate the place."

He nodded at his own words feeling dread build inside him at the amount of people waking the streets. Ketch asked "And how do we do that?"

He let out an annoyed shout "I don't know, I don't have a plan yet." He looked away when instantly every one took three steps back, he took deep breaths calming himself down. Getting angry right now would do nothing but make him more hard headed. The sun hit him right in the face and he let the burn sizzle. He looked down to avoid the sun blinding him and then he saw a small child walking outside the house.

He gasped when an idea snapped him, he looked back at Benny who threw a confused look at him. Getting creeped out when a smirk morphed its way up Dean's face.

Dean watched as Cole and Abaddon led a good chunk of people towards the forest where Benny had ran with the small child with the false hoax that a kid had been abducted, he walked towards the other group of people which contained of men, women, teens and children. He hid them in a safe house locking the door behind him after he had instructed them to not let a sound out.

He asked addressing his soldiers "Is anyone left?" When he got the response, Dean directed them all to go in different directions to check again that no living being is in the area. He noticed the people from Salem walking down the street with torches ablaze with fire.

As they started to put gasoline on the buildings and lightening them up, Dean pushed them back with a roar taking a sack to pat down the fire. He tackled the man to the ground when he came to stop him with a shout.

He noticed Asa from the stall who shouted at him "So you have chosen there side against us??" Dean came at the man gripping the lapels of his saggy pheran "Don't you see it, there are no sides. Asmodeus is playing with your minds, those boys were terrorists."

He kneeled infront of the man taking a hold of his legs "Please, don't do this. It will only make matters worse." The man looked at him with stricken eyes before they turned harsh again.

Dean let the two men take him by the arms keeping him away from Asa who said with hesitant shout "Throw him in there with them. Lester, light him on fire." He snapped his eyes up at the guy next to the man who had his face hidden bringing the torch near him.

With a roar, he freed himself by knocking his elbow to one guy's neck and throwing him on the other. He took the hand which was holding the torch in a painful grip and toppled the man on his back, he put his boot over Lester's chest digging it into his sternum. He said with an unnerving calm voice "It's a good thing you came out on your own."

Lester screamed as he pressed his foot hearing a small crunching, he had taken the torch from the man and was slowly inching it towards his face, everyone stepped back as they shouted "What are you doing?"

Instead of replying, Dean growled "Tell them the truth." When the man did not say anything he burned the man's knee making him scream. Lester started voice gurgled "He is right, I was paid by Asmodeus to give the information to Zion's Army. Those boys were assailants."

The mob instantly grew mum at the revelation, as the man stared wide eyed at Lester. Giving a harsh kick to the side, Dean moved away letting the people take care of the black sheep between them.

Asa teared up and hugged him "Sir, I have made a grave mistake. Please forgive me, sir." Dean patted the man on his back, as he let go of him putting a hand on his shoulder he looked down at the man "We can still save the day."

The people who had gathered with the intention to kill changed their ways and started pouring water over the fire, it wasn't long before Benny returned with Abaddon and Cole getting followed by the throng of Shedim's people who stared in shock that their neighbouring village was putting out the fire.

Dean smiled as the two groups reconciled, he saw Benny moving around cluelessly still holding onto the child. He patted his friend on the back who smiled at him "Dean, you did it." A man came to take the child off Benny's hands, the group of soldiers finally got away from people patting them or cheering for them. They all walked proudly with their heads held high, knowing that humanity had been restored today and those who wanted to hurt their country got the exact opposite.

After that incident, Jody Mills from the global radio came to interview the soldiers. Asking them if they would want to say something to their family as they were miles away from home.

She gave the first chance to Benny who said with a fond smile near the mike "I just had a daughter. From the letters my wife sends me, she is an exact copy of me. I wanted to name her but I am still stuck here."

"You can do it now." Jody said with a grin watching a surprised look pass on the man's face as he questioned "I can?" She nodded back.

He looked out of the tent as he called out the Lieutenant "Dean, I need your help." The blonde man jogged inside the tent as he settled on the stool infront of the radio machine. "What's up?"

"I have decided to name my baby, as promised you get to name her brotha"

Dean grinned as he rounded his head for possible names then said "Amara?" His friend nodded as he said over the mike "I hope you're listening Andrea because I have decided, my baby will be called Amara." On the other side of the country a little child cooed at the name in her mother's arms as she held her baby girl near the radio listening to her husband's words who pronounced the name thrice. She said nosing her daughter cheeks "Amara."

Jody smiled as the soldiers cheered around her, then she turned to the man of honour  "Lieutenant Dean, The Hero of Zion. Would you like to say something to your family?"

Dean swept his eyes down before looking at the lady as he said "I have no one, mam" When Benny tapped over the mike, he leaned towards it to tell his story "I'm a lone soldier, everything I know is around the barracks. I do have a brother but he is lost to the sea. So I guess I'm on my own, huh?"

Jody looked at the dopey man in front of her with a perturbed look, before she could have said anything the boy had been called back by someone and he left. When she got back to her station she couldn't stop thinking of the Leutinant so the first thing she did when the crew gave her a thumbs up behind the glass wall was mention him.

"I only got to know about Lieutenant Dean yesterday, the lone solider protecting our borders. Zion has Dean but he has no one to talk over radio or send home a letter too. So it comes on us to show him that he is not alone. So I wrote a letter to my son, Dean, yesterday. Now it's your turn."

Dean was trotting on the horse back with Abaddon and Cole following him on their own horses when he heard someone shout his name, he turned to see Garth, their post man waving at him.

"Dean, you have a letter." He frowned confused did his brother finally decide to get in touch with him but then the skinny man pulled up a sack as he shouted "Actually you have letters."

Dean let the letters tumble down on his bed with a grin, apparently Jody hadn't just given him a letter. She had asked for others to write to him too, he opened them one by one reading as they mentioned themselves as his brother, sister, uncle, aunt, mother, father and all the familial things they could have mentioned him as.

He noticed that there was a big package inviting his attention, he quickly picked it up. When he opened the package, there was a steel tiffin with a letter on top of it. Opening it he let his eyes graze over the words.

Dear brother Dean,

I heard you on the radio. You jerk, how dare you lie infront of millions of people. "I have no one" , you literally raised me and you think I will be ungrateful enough to forget about you. I went to our house but I found out someone else was living there. By the way, you have a neice. She had celebrated her birthday last week, we haven't baptised her yet. I hope you will be there for that. And my wife, Jess, had prepared mini pies so I hope you still like them.

Your bitchy brother,
Sam.

Dean smiled as he opened the tiffin to sniff at the contents inside, it was pumpkin pie. He bit on one barey holding back his moan as it melted in his mouth, Jess was one great cook that's for sure. With a renowned strength, he sat on the table and started replying to every single letter.

He didn't even sleep just so he could reply to every single one of them, and he also kept his commando up to help him out with the letters. At morning he ran towards the iron gatepost, followed by his friends who grumbled at him for having too much energy with no sleep.

He stood at attention when he noticed Major Singer and Captain Lucifer passing by, he saluted them as he asked the Major "Sir, I wish you could grant me with two month leave."

"So long, is there any problem?"

He patted the sack filled with letters grinning down at the gruff man "No sir, I want to meet my family." Bobby didn't smile but his lips did twitch as he nodded "Okay, it will be granted, Lieutenant." Nodding he took a step back and put his foot down in attention saluting "Sir."

He sat on the bonnet of his jeep staring at the gate for Garth and his letters, jittering with annoyance when there was no sign of the skinny man and his scooter. He trampled around the jeep like a caged beast before Benny came to join him.

"Still waiting on Garth."

He growled back in annoyance "Three hours delay. It's a good thing he is not in my team or I would have skinned him alive." The other man chuckled as he sulked before getting up when he noticed the stick figure on his scooter.

He slapped the man upside his head who apologized to him "I should have you court-martialed. You have my letters?" Garth nodded and pulled another sack with letters exchanging it with his replies "Send them fast." He pulled out the pie he had saved from his pocket, passing it to the man "It's Pie, my brother has sent me this."

Dean quickly ran back to his room, to read the letters. He felt like a little child again, excited over anything but it wasn't anything. These were the letters from his family that weren't his blood but it was his nonetheless. He sat back to open the sack when he noticed an envelope on the floor, he cursed picking it up as he realised that he has left one.

He opened the letter and instantly his eyes bugged out of his socket because this letter was different, a whole new different.

Dear Dean

So you have no one? How come you can lie like this? You seem have totally forgotten you have a husband at home.

"Husband?' He stared at words in shock, did he marry someone under the inflence of alcohol? He shook his head no that couldn't have been true. He kept reading on the letter.

You said 'I will be right back' and just left. As I kept waiting at home for your return, my parents have started to question your faithfulness. No wonder, they had already warned me about you. That this army man wouldn't come back but alas I still married you...so I guess I would just have to bear this longing. Don't miss me too much okay?

Yours Castiel

Dean had started smiling by the end of the letter, none of letters have addressed him as a lover. Then this...Castiel tumbled through the sack, regarding him with such ease like they had known each other for years. He quickly picked up the sack and shook it to let the contents fall on the floor. He sifted through each one then grasped at the one which had Castiel written on the back. With quick fingers he undid the letter, lounging himself against the floor his back to table, getting comfortable to read the letter.

Dear Dean,

How are you my strong hubby? It's you then I'm guessing you would be fine. Somehow I'm already feeling the heat waves come through as I write this, by the way are you still in Sinai?

Dean scratched the back of his neck barely holding a grin at 'my strong hubby'. Was this Castiel trying to make him blush? With a fond chuckle he went back to reading.

It has been broadcasted that it's going to rain soon, looks like the weathers are taking your lead. They come as they want and leave without staying with me. When will you come back, Dean? Always in your thoughts.

Your husband
Castiel

Dean let his head fall back over the desk edge with a smile,
"Cas." He looked back down at the letter turning it over to see the address where he is going to post it but was shocked to find none. There was no sender's address, so his secret husband was trying to be discreet.

"Who are you?" He thumbed at the name and tried to sniff to see that if it gave anything away, he blinked at the scent of Jasmine. Atleast he knew what he would buy if he ever met the man. Dean shook his head as he said "Not man, my husband."
