    Bruce knew that Clark was an attractive man, so he shouldn’t be surprised that when he shows up to galas, all awkward smiles and blushing, people would have their eye on him. It was something Bruce was familiar with himself, of course. He had his reputation to maintain.

     

    But after whatever had gotten into Clark this last month, whatever had gotten into him, was quickly coming to a peak as Clark locked eyes with him across the room. Two beautiful women were draped over his sides, pawing at his chest, but the real kicker was the young man practically sat in Clark’s lap, eyeing his lips with half-lidded lust, hand slowly caressing the side of his face.

     

    For the first time in his life, Bruce felt what others probably do when people look at Brucie Wayne. For what was now becoming a frequent experience, Bruce felt a sharp stab of jealousy in the pits of his stomach and anger tightening his muscles.

     

    Clark was physically occupied with other pretty socialites, but seemed to only have eyes for Bruce, looking at him like he knew what it was doing to him. With a rush of adrenaline at the thought, Bruce decided that enough was enough. It was time to do something about this.

He thinks. He’s never actually had a job interview, never mind failed at one. That may be part of the problem.

    “So,” he begins, a tentative foray into the awkward silence broken only by the sounds of Jonathan’s fork scraping mashed potatoes onto his plate. “How’s the, ah, harvest this year?”

    “Bad,” Jonathan says, and does not elaborate.
