Summary
Spock has worried over this task for a lifetime, and came up with a failsafe that might just save the Vulcan that exists in the next universe. The failsafe also involves deeply selfish things, but you can't fault an old man for wanting the youth to have more opportunities than he ever could.
He sends drones ahead of him into the black hole, hoping that the automated programming he coded into them will change the past for the better.
Mostly a romantic academy-era drama until a world is ending and they need to stop it from the point of view of the younger Spock and Jim Kirk.
Or: If Jim Kirk can cheat his way out of a no-win simulation with some code, Spock can do it in real life with some time travel.

The stranger was only an inch, perhaps two, taller, but the difference felt cavernous in the press.
Dark hair razor-trimmed at the temples. Cheekbones that could have been machined. Eyes so dark they swallowed the cabin light—steady, unblinking. Something in the angularity of the face, the absolute economy of movement, made Jim’s hindbrain supply the word Vulcan before anything else could override it.
Their eyes met.
Jim’s lungs forgot protocol.

Summary
After several failed attempts to finally consummate their relationship, Jim has finally concluded that his and Spock's romantic relationship will be a chaste one. It isn't ideal, but it's worth it to be with the Vulcan he loves.
Spock has his reasons for rejecting Jim's advances, but a drunken mistake during Jim's birthday celebration may finally bring those reasons into the light.

It can be lonely, being captain of a starship. So when Jim’s favorite person in the universe hitches a ride on the Enterprise, he takes a long weekend to soak up all the heart eyes and affection and cuddles that Ambassador Spock will give him.
When Spock lost all his bonds during the destruction of Vulcan, he shut himself down tight. He can’t touch Jim even in passing, because he can’t risk sharing his broken self. When Ambassador Spock comes aboard, Spock starts to wonder if maybe Jim could welcome his touches after all…
