For the sake of the storyline, Sam and Dean are older when they last see Bobby (and Elowyn) before John takes them away. But, they are still the same age by the start of Season 2, where it was always you takes place.
It was always you is a slow burn for all the Dean girls who wished they could have been there for him after John’s death. For all the yearners and lovers of angst.
