    Summary

Wriothesley knows he has to moderate his compliments, but he can’t help doling them out at every opportunity. Making Neuvillette happy makes him happy, and that’s the most he’ll ever have, this reflected sort of happiness. He may be a duke, but they’re so far apart from each other in every meaningful way. So he contents himself with the compliments, with Neuvillette’s shy, curving smile.

Until one day he says, “Have you done something different with your hair? It looks nice today,” and Neuvillette, canting his head to the side, replies, “You are uncommonly complimentary of me, Your Grace.”

Wriothesley discovers the impact that praise has on Neuvillette and uses it to devastating effect.

But who would be permitted the time and closeness to undo the laces of Felix’s boots, ankle to knee, to guide his leg out of them carefully—to do for Felix what he could do for himself, with more thought than anyone would show the task, Felix included?

And who else would Felix ever allow to do this?

Felix and Sylvain have known each other for most of their lives; they've learned side-by-side, fought in war side-by-side, and spent countless hours just existing in the same vicinity. That doesn't mean that they know all there is to know about each other, though, or about themselves.

or: Felix knew Sylvain was a good boy, just not that he liked being told it so plainly.

There’s a kiss that doesn’t linger nearly long enough, followed by a promise from Felix to flay Sylvain if he doesn’t come home alive (first with magic, then with his swords, before finally allowing Ingrid to also have her turn).

Sylvain swings into his saddle and turns, blowing a kiss as he goes, disappearing quickly into the horizon.

Sylvain leaves for negotiations in Sreng. Felix worries.

    Summary

The only thing that got him through the war was hate. Hate for the boar. Hate for his father. Hate for the enemy and the empire. He hated staying still, too, so learning magic and swordsmanship ensured that he never had to. He loved being on his feet. Loved pushing his body to his limits.
But now he was, what, twenty-four? Who knew being twenty-four would hurt this much? He didn’t anticipate this much joint pain. Or heart pain. Or migraines. Or nightmares.

Felix stared at the paperwork on his desk. He watched the candle drip wax, too. (He wanted to set his paperwork ablaze. He wanted to set his desk ablaze, too.)

    He was tired.

He was so, so, so fucking tired.

And maybe he just wanted someone, anyone, to tell him that it would all be alright.

Sylvain visits Felix in the middle of a mental breakdown. Chaos ensues.
