He squinted against the burst of pain behind his eyes from the sun's reflective glare, swiping his thumb along the bottom of the screen in the general area his muscle memory dictated would give him what he wished. It took a few tries until the call accepted.

A single ragged sob echoed over the line.

Naim’s stomach churns. He curls towards Ryan, shifting onto his side, as Ryan’s gaze lands on him, piercing. He shakes his head.
“Good,” Ryan says, lifting the cigarette to his mouth.
Naim thinks of photobooth pictures, of hot blood trickling down Ryan’s neck, of flame and fear. He presses a soft kiss to Ryan’s side, over his ribs, over the soft cotton of his shirt, and inhales his scent.

Ryan frowned. Cigarettes forgotten, he shifted onto his side so he could look at Naim properly, but he didn’t speak. Not yet—he knew from the way Naim was frowning that he was trying to untangle the chaos in his brain.
“Now that we’ve gotten this far, it makes me… Hope.”
“... For more?”
Naim couldn’t meet his eyes, but Ryan didn’t push it.
“... Yeah.”
He didn’t think he could handle it if he met Naim’s eyes right now, either.
