When Penelope took Lumley by the elbow, Colin felt a phantom weight at his own side, taking his arm. In that moment, he could not help the image that flashed into his mind— Penelope on his arm, beaming up at him. Her eyes were shining as they usually did in those small moments between just the two of them. The jealousy was overtaken by something else, a kind of…yearning. To have Penelope at his side, to have her look at him like that again.
It was at exactly that moment that Penelope turned to scan the ballroom, and her gaze caught his.
