It's like that old cliche, about a soldier who comes home from war and goes grocery shopping, only to be stumped by the variety of cereals in the cereal aisle.

Only, instead of cereal, Bucky's in a sex-toy shop picking out a strap-on.

    Summary

Lucanis does feel guilty, sometimes. Spite can smell, taste, hear. See clearly, once Lucanis got out of the way. To feel, though… it just doesn't seem to come across the same. Maybe that's what happens, when you get forced into a mind actively pulling as far away from the body it's inhabiting as hard as it possibly can. Or maybe it's just a spirit thing. That's a preferable thought. Less likely—but preferable.

Spite, at least, doesn't seem too bothered by it. And it has been a somewhat convenient misalignment, occasionally. In a fight, unbothered by an injury. At the end of a particularly long day, easing protesting muscles and joints into a tub of ice water without worrying about objection. And with sex. Convenient, that Spite finds it puzzling and pointless, at best. Boring, usually.

The problem, of course, is Rook. Spite might find sex odd and uninteresting, but Rook? He's turned towards her like the sun from the first moment.

So, really—Lucanis should have seen this coming.

    Summary

Rook's life is a mess, objectively speaking, and keeping the Lighthouse coffee bar running after the year she's had isn't making it any easier. Then she meets Lucanis Dellamorte, a rich guy with enough skeletons in his closet to fill a graveyard, and her life gets even messier. Grief is weird, being an adult is hard, and falling in love might be the messiest thing of all.

This is a story about two people falling in love, but it’s also my love letter to the friend group. It’s not a very serious story, except when it is (because life’s not that serious, except when it is.)

In the next two months, he tries so hard not to think about her. It’s peak season, so he’s busy keeping the team in line and out of trouble (and mostly out of danger). Kate texts him occasionally, one off things that he doesn’t know how to respond to.

SPC is calling an area in NW OK today. Should be good. Be careful.
A screenshot of the doppler hook of a nasty cell in Georgia, no comment, just an exclamation point.
A photo of the Manhattan skyline darkened by storm clouds.
A comment on the YouTube channel, side-eye emojis on a video of him explaining the importance of moisture in mesocyclone development. He tries not to think about what it means.

Or: Kate leaves, then comes back. A story of coming home.
