Summary
A runaway intent on leaving behind your past, you find yourself living in a town straight out of rural Americana. Building a life as a social worker after years of arduous study, you slowly integrate yourself into the community. Life moves around you like clockwork, even if the town stays frozen in decades-old nostalgia. Since people don’t leave unless it’s in a casket or with a one-way plane ticket, life is bound to stay uneventful. It’s exactly the sort of quiet you need.
Except then you meet Father Miller. And suddenly, your life goes from boring to painfully cliché.
He’s not who he should be, not around you. And you were never good to begin with.

Summary
For a while he thinks he’s doing everything he’s supposed to be doing. He isn’t sure what he feels, why he feels it, but he manages to wear a straight face and look at you with sympathy and pedagogical concern. At times he reads into the way you move around him, the way you come forward and then withdraw over and over again and he wonders what this is for you, what role you want him to take on.
Robby knows loneliness when he sees it.

Title from I Bet On Losing Dogs by Mitski
After a transfer from your last residency you had high hopes for PTMC, and Robby only made them higher. He sees into you, through you, to the bits of yourself you’ve done such a good job of tucking neatly away. It’s amazing really, the way he pulls the core of yourself out into the light with those pretty fingers and big brown eyes. What a shame, that you’re such an awful mess inside.

Summary
“Kid, get the hell outta my tree.”
Stupid fucking neighbors. She’s never even seen the person who lives here before.
“It’s not your tree,” she calls back, infusing her tone with as much attitude as she can muster. “No one owns a tree.” Deep breaths, Ellie. Can’t give away how scared you are, especially not to a stranger. Especially especially not to a man.
“Tree’s on my property. I own the property, so I own the tree. Now scram.”

Summary
After your album tanks, you'll do anything it takes to stay relevant - even sign up to get engaged on reality TV. You're not doing this for love, and you harbor no delusions about finding it. But then you meet Joel Miller. He's a guarded single dad with a love of your music, and he sees straight through your act. You want him desperately, and you think he wants you too. The problem is, Joel isn't a contestant. He's your cameraman. The only guy on set that you can't have.

Summary
When your high-powered marketing career goes up in flames, you find yourself back in Texas and out of options—until your old childhood best friend Tommy Miller offers you a job at his family’s growing construction company. The only catch? His older brother Joel, the project manager with a chip on his shoulder and zero patience for your city-slicker attitude.
You clash instantly: you’re clever, confident, and painfully corporate. He’s quiet, rugged, and set in his ways. You push his buttons. He pushes back harder. But somewhere between long meetings, late nights, resurfacing memories, hurt, along with one very unexpected work trip… the tension starts to shift.
What begins as bickering turns into banter. Glances linger. Walls crack. And neither of you is quite sure when things started to change.
