Summary
They’ve been working their way up to this slowly. As Charles pointed out, they have forever, and, well, Edwin gets overwhelmed. In his defense, he’d existed for almost 130 years without really experiencing lust. It was a lot.
But they’re here now. Edwin is on his back, trembling, on a bed they’d acquired just for this because Charles insisted on doing it right. The trembling is less to do with feeling like his atoms are going to fly apart because surely he wasn’t made to be able to feel this good, and more to do with the fact that Charles has been fingering him for an approximate decade.

Before Crystal, before Niko, Edwin might have taken that answer at face value. Well, to be more precise, Edwin and Charles would never be having this conversation in the first place.
Instead, he recognizes the attempt at humor for the deflection it is and asks, “Why?”
Before Port Townsend, Charles might have protested that he’d just explained why, you numpty. But today he says simply, “I wanted to.”

“My body was never found,” he replies softly. “There is a memorial marker next to my parents’ graves, but my remains are not there.”
The idea is so horrifying that it stuns Charles into silence for a couple seconds. “I didn’t know that. Why didn’t I know that?”
Edwin’s shoulders tense. “The whole thing is bloody tragic enough as it is.”
Grabbing his wrist, Charles begins marching them back in the direction of the pond they used to get here.
Edwin doesn’t resist, but he does argue, because of course he does. “Charles, where are we going?”
“St. Hilarion’s. We’ve got a new case, don’t we?”
