Summary
“Cal has never had the luxury or the security to be anything other than what circumstances forced him to be,” Cere says. Her voice contains a tinge of sorrow, one which Merrin suspects she has failed to recognize in the past. “I don’t think he knows who he is—or who he wants to be—any more than you do, Merrin. He has an idea of who he thinks he should be, one that has guided him for the last decade, but he’s never had a real opportunity to reflect and examine if that’s what he wants for himself.”
Merrin frowns, feeling chastised. Cal has always been so set in his path; she feels foolish for seeing the wounds of his past and mistaking them for an enviable certainty of purpose.
As if reading her mind, Greez laughs a little too loud and says, “Don’t beat yourself up about it, Merrin. He’s got himself fooled too.”
To care for Cal is a privilege.

Summary
“I was looking for you, I’ll admit. But it wasn’t to nanny you.” Unexpectedly, Seonhee slipped her hand into Kiryu's grip. At some point, she’d taken off her gloves and her skin was hot against his own cold fingers. “Rather… I had something else in mind.”

Summary
Majima watched as Kiryu fell to his hands and knees, sapped of his godlike strength and fortitude, weeping openly and begging Ebina for forgiveness. Nothing in Majima’s fifty-nine years had prepared him to make sense of the sight; it was something that shouldn’t have been allowed to happen according to all the rules of the universe that he understood. Hindbrain fear and unfair revulsion churned around inside of him, rooting him to the spot as he witnessed the violation of a natural law.

Summary
“I can take care of myself! Go!” Kiryu shouted over his shoulder. Behind him, the car spun its tires fruitlessly for a second, kicking up a cloud of dust to join the billowing smoke, then lurched forward with purchase and raced away as abruptly as it had arrived.
Yamai blinked at the space where the car had been and then at the man who remained, momentarily stunned by the fact they had abandoned one of their own. Kasuga was an idiot, but he hadn’t taken him for a coward, too.

Summary
She would not admit this to anyone, but it scares her how much she has come to care for this crew. The brutal lesson of how quickly and easily loss can strike is etched into her very bones.
She looks down at Cal and knows it is the same for him.
Her fingers softly comb through his hair, avoiding the back of his head, and trace down his forehead. He stirs, and blinks an eye open to look at her.
“Hi,” he whispers.
“Hello,” she whispers back.
“M’glad you’re here,” he says, and then promptly falls back asleep.

Summary
"Connor became ‘woke’, as the kids say, on a biting December morning. Upon careful consideration, he determined it was best not to tell anybody."
List of things Connor has ruined since he deviated: the police force. Hunts for deviants. The printer. Lieutenant Anderson’s patience. Gavin Reed’s kneecap. The sense of safety and security that came when you were not acting as a double agent for the month old yet still unsuccessful terrorist organization and spilling confidential government secrets. The coffee machine. His life.
Mostly his life.

Summary
“If you’re going to work for me, I’ll expect you to keep up,” Kiryu declared. “You’re a new recruit, and you’ll have to pull your weight just like everyone else. No special treatment.”
“I’d never ask you for that,” Daigo protested. He hesitated for a second, then added tentatively, “Aniki.”
Kiryu screwed his lips into a grimace and stiffened in discomfort at the title. Next to him, Yayoi took another drag in a vain effort to hide her amused smile. Daigo recalled, belatedly, the difficulty with which he’d persuaded the man to call him something other than young master.
“You haven’t really sworn up yet, so I don’t think…” Kiryu started.
“Okay, well, I’ll still take whatever jobs you give me, Kiryu-san,” Daigo said.

Summary
“We might have another option,” he says. “I maybe know a place where we could find plenty of replacements for the nav and comm systems, the right age even. Guaranteed.”
“Where?”
“Oh, just a massive scrapyard full of old Republic-era ships, that I happen to know my way around.”
Cere looks at him with a flat, humorless expression on her face. “You want to go back to Bracca.”
Cal nods. “I want to go back to Bracca. Ok, well, want is a strong word…”
- - -
They’ve traversed the meandering pathways under Nur’s dark oceans and evaded the Inquisition yet again, but they’re far from out of danger, and a long way from reconnecting with the Mantis. All they’ve got is a stolen ship with a broken navigational computer and there’s only one place in the galaxy they might find a replacement.
There’s just one other problem: Cal is dying. He’s been dying from the start.
Cal just really, really doesn't want to die on Bracca.

Bookmarker's Notes
In a more coherent moment, after Cere had finally gotten him to sleep a while, he finally understood. With the sober clarity that came from rest, he realized that he was dying. That death had only been temporarily evaded. He watched Cere pack up their things, talk with BD-1, and thought about dying. He came to terms with it, accepted it, but also knew he had to do one more thing. He couldn’t leave Cere alone, not after all she’d lost that day, after all she went through to save him. He couldn’t leave her alone in that horrible dark tunnel. He just had to stay alive long enough to get her back to the Mantis, back to Greez and Merrin. He had been alone once, lost and with his heart shattered into jagged shards, and he couldn’t fathom doing that to her. Cal vowed to stay alive long enough to get her home and used that as fuel to keep him going as he got sicker, and more exhausted, and lucid periods became fewer and farther between.
But in the end, in his most feverishly delirious moments, when every cell in his body ached and dread pulled on him like a currant pulling him into some dark void, he wondered if he was still just one more thing haunting Cere.
