The first night Marty gets Rust home and put to bed he whimpers like an old hound dog in his sleep, making these ripped-raw noises that well and gurgle up past his lips like fresh blood from the hole in his gut all over again. Doesn’t know he’s doing it, course not, but Marty lays there next to him in the dark—the man’s only got one bed, ain’t no shame in that—and has to wonder about the Vietnam-grade shit Rust’s got playing in living technicolor in his head.

Summary
Marty told Rust he'd have a place to stay after he left the hospital, and he meant it. He hadn't necessarily been expecting a week or two of recuperation to turn into a permanent kind of roommates situation, but Rust seems to have no intention of moving out, and Marty has no intention of kicking him out, either, for reasons he can't quite manage to articulate.
Which is to say, Rust has always been kind of prescient-- but Marty might not have guessed just how on the nose his joke about getting engaged was.

Silence stretched. The set of Randy’s jaw told Benson he had no intention of filling it.
Benson sighed, rubbing his eyes. “And, uh, one of the ways I come back down is,” he gestured at nothing, “y’know, uh –”
“Sleeping with strangers?” Randy asked, and the anger was different now, heavy in the air between them. It tasted like salt, like sticking his tongue in a socket.
Benson shrugged. “Pain.”
“Pain?”
“It –” Benson sighed. “It needs to hurt. Otherwise it won’t work.”
___Benson has an itch that needs scratching. Randy offers a safer alternative.
