    Summary

‘A horse must be broken before it can be ridden. But you ought to choose your mount carefully. Consider its purpose. A draft horse will be of little use to a racemaster, and a thoroughbred courser still less use to a farmer with a cart to pull. Teaching a carthorse to leap fences will destroy your homestead, and wasting a fine swift runner on a burdensome yoke will turn the beast vicious. You must choose the right horse for the job, and break it in, before you can set it to work. War is a messy, bloody business, and it takes a certain kind of man to weather it and come out the other side stronger. You have a talent for horses, for understanding them and ensuring that they understand you. I have the same talent, but for men of war.’

Erik is recruited for the 7th Cavalry following the Battle of Little Bighorn by Lieutenant Ištván Tóth. Twenty years later, they reunite when Erik is a deserter from the Mexican frontier and offers his services as a horse wrangler on the retired Ištván's ranch.

    Summary

Erik repeats the information again, blushing; he’s more than aware that, at seventeen, he’s young enough to be the nurse’s son. Still, he’s had daddy issues longer than he’s had an actual father, always gravitating towards older men with an air of authority and a cruel streak that speaks to his need to feel loved by being corrected. In all honesty, it’s probably intensive and extensive therapy he needs more than an older boyfriend who isn’t afraid to take him over his knee when Erik pushes his buttons, but with only a tenner in coins, five or six expired bus tickets, and a student ID card in his wallet, therapy is just ever so slightly beyond him at the moment. So father figure/daddy it is.

    Summary

    Piety /ˈpaɪ.ə.ti/
    Noun
the quality of being religious or reverent: "acts of piety and charity"

Pavel is an acolyte at a church in Bohemia, and is interrupted during the Rite of Being to serve as the confessor to a young man whose list of sins seems only to grow the longer he spends in Pious' presence.

(Alternatively, whilst looking for recruits for the band of mercenaries in Vranik and Pribyslavitz, Erik happens upon a hot priest, Fleabag style. And, well, his daddy issues apparently can't resist a Father either, even one who's not been ordained yet.)

Isterik Week 2025 Day 4 prompt: scars / gift (Nebakov)

‘Ištván,’ Erik greets him, smiling, as if they’re old friends.
‘Erik,’ he says simply. ‘It’s good to see you. What’s going on?’
‘Ah,’ Erik grins, gesturing behind him at a couple in the garland wreaths of newlyweds. ‘It’s my daughter’s wedding day.’

Isterik Week 2025 Day 2 prompt: lessons / shadows (Vranik)

‘No, my boy, not at all. A stupid boy would not put in half the effort you do into trying. Any fool can see you’re fighting your hardest.’ He stroked the boy’s hair with one palm, as Erik’s tears soaked into his shirtfront, hands fisted in the material as he buried his face in Ištván’s shoulder. ‘I am proud of you, dear boy. Few would persevere in the face of such difficulty.’ He smiled wryly. ‘Mind you, I knew how stubborn you were from the moment I attempted to send you away, so perhaps I shouldn’t be so surprised.’

Ištván takes in a small boy after the siege of a village in Moravia. Upon taking the boy as his page, he realises whilst teaching the boy to read that Erik is dyslexic. A character study in Ištván as a father figure before and then during Erik's development of romantic feelings for him.

Isterik Week 2025 Day 1 prompt: beginnings / promise (Moravia).

He was pale, and younger than Erik had expected; mousy-brown curls peeked out from beneath his sallet and coif, tips glued to his fair cheeks with sweat. He had eyes as the colour of pitch and a round, clean-shaven face, jawline cushioned with enough fat to make him look almost fatherly.
‘You don’t have to be afraid of me, boy.’

Erik and Ištván's first meeting during the sacking of Erik's village in Moravia.

    Summary

Sometimes he wonders if he wears gloves not to disguise the scars webbing silver over his already fair skin, but to cover the bloodstains he sees whenever he closes his eyes. He wears black for the same reason: in its total absence of light, it absorbs everything. Tears, blood, shit; black is black, and nothing thrown at it will change that.

    Summary

molly: (noun) a slur used to describe an effeminate, homosexual man
molly house: (noun) a tavern or other establishment in 18th and 19th century England where homosexuals could meet for companionship and/or sexual encounters
    -
He looks at the boy, his boy, who watches him with blue eyes fringed with thick black lashes, his full lips curved in a sad smile. As though Hans’ thoughts are written, clear as day, on his face. When we leave, that smile says, things will be back to normal. To pain, and fear, and that crushing emptiness that nothing else in the world can fill. So drink up here, touch, kiss; take what you can in the time you have. Because we all know it won’t last.

Hans Capon is a gay man trapped in a lavender marriage in London, 1793. He's out walking one night when he takes a wrong turning and stumbles across a young man who introduces him to something that feels like home: a space where men like him can be themselves, fully and without shame. Until the authorities are alerted, and everything comes crashing down around Hans' ears once more.

    Summary

    ‘See? Doesn’t that feel better?’
Erik’s voice is raw, his face lobster-red and broad frame trembling as Ištván’s fingers caress the fabric over his wrist. ‘Y-yeah, I – I s’pose so.’
‘Of course it does,’ he murmurs, reassuring. ‘And it brings me pleasure to do this for you. You want to be a good boy for me, don’t you?’
    ‘Yes,’ Erik gasps, strangled.

Inspired by Lowkey_Laufey's fic Good Boy, because it's lived rent free in my head since he started writing it and I'm obsessed with manager Ištván becoming Erik's sugar daddy.

Henry grins, savage, and licks the curve of Erik’s ear again. Snaps his hips, fucking him rough and hard, as he taunts: ‘How does the stronger dog feel, eh? Better than the last one?’

Post-Ištván's death, Henry accepts Erik's challenge of a duel. Cue Henry proving Ištván's old adage of the stronger dog.

    Summary

Henry shakes himself free of whatever demon had gripped him for that single, mad moment. It’s Adder, for fuck’s sake. If there’s a single man in Bohemia more devoted to apparently fucking his way through the entire female population, Henry has yet to meet him. There is a time and a place he will permit himself such fantasies, and in the town square of Kuttenberg is not it. Save it for when he’s alone of an evening, curled up on his straw pallet on the cellar floor of Ruthard Manor. There, he can think about Adder’s long, fine legs in his tight hose, and the way they hug the curve of his arse as he cocks his hip, to his heart’s content. At least if he’s thinking about Adder, he’s not thinking about –

Henry's canon conversation with Adder about why he's so popular with women doesn't go well, as Henry doesn't understand a word. Thankfully, and luckily for Henry, Adder is open to the possibility of showing him what he means...

Whoever it is who shares his bedroom wall is fucking loud. When he’s got someone over, they might as well be right there in Henry’s bed next to him, he can hear it that clearly. And his neighbour never fucking shuts up. It’s a constant stream of demands, pleas, and filthy praise; all delivered in that low, delicious tenor. Haughty, commanding. Never failing to let his partner know exactly what he wants, where and how he wants it. Henry finds himself halfway between rolling his eyes – God, this guy is high-fucking-maintenance – and popping a semi, because there’s definitely something to be said for a direct order being given in that husky voice. Particularly when he gets what he wants and makes that beautiful mewling sound in reward.

    Summary

It’s a dangerous line of thought to pursue in public. Hans lounging in the bathtub, naked as the day he was born, gulping from the tankard whilst Henry’s eyes – greedy, shameful – stole glimpses at the working of his fine throat, the water dripping off his blond hair to puddle in the hollow between his collarbones. Henry swallows, licking his lips to ward off the sudden dryness of his mouth, casting glances around the room to ensure nobody has caught him in his base thoughts. He feels a frisson of – something – slide down his spine beneath his pourpoint as his gaze meets another, steadier, black one in the corner.

Black Bartosch and Henry’s night together, in which Henry tries to fuck the desperate, pining crush he has on Hans out of his system and Bartosch is too gentle and understanding for words.

Hans is spinning out, losing his mind; he must be, because he murmurs, ‘Not a lord. A lady.’ Henry makes a broken sound, reaching up to interlace their fingers, holding him down. Encompassing him as tightly as a second skin. He groans.

‘A-aye, a lady, my lady. My girl.’
