Hometown and its citizens are forced to deal with the deaths of Kris and Noelle. Their grief takes many shapes and sizes.

This world was soaked in violence, in anger, in fear; sometimes, when he looked at Scott, there was a hatred there that he had never seen anywhere else, and it wouldn’t leave his friend’s usually mild eyes. There was something in the water and apparently no one minded the taste.
No one except him.
It scared him, because he didn’t understand it. The grudges and violence they held so close, he pushed away. It went against some sort of unbreakable code in him.
I’ll kill you, they said; but none of them knew what was behind that threat—what was death in this world, really?
Jimmy had certainly never expected to find out first.

“Right.” The word hung as heavy as the rain above them, and for a moment they slipped back into the old empty silence. Cleo stared at Etho, and Etho wisely confined his gaze to the horizon.

It was all contained in the little movements—Mira had learned most feelings were. It was how Rumi froze on the threshold of rooms sometimes, after she remembered she was only wearing a t-shirt and nothing was stopping them from looking at her patterns. How she recoiled when Zoey linked arms with her now, enough times that Zoey had stopped doing it. How on some mornings when Mira brought her breakfast in bed, just as a treat, she would jerk the covers up over her shoulders in a sleepy panic. Mira would pretend not to notice as she sheepishly lowered them again.
She did notice. (She had too, because if she overlooked something again—)
She couldn’t let HUNTR/X fall apart again.
Today, that meant finding Rumi a pair of shoes to wear. Tomorrow—who knew?
