It happened when I was working on Wireman Looks West. It only happened the once, for which I was glad. It felt like some sort of invasion of privacy. Not that I thought Wireman would care - I was pretty sure he wouldn’t - hell, I was pretty sure he *didn’t*, based on the fact that he winked at me on the beach the next morning. With his good eye. Maybe it was because I was pretty sure he knew, and he didn’t care.
Because I knew who it was, of course, even in black and white, even in quick, harsh charcoal strokes. Because I was drawing Wireman jerking off, Wireman choking the chicken, Wireman shaking hands with the devil. And yet I couldn’t stop. -

PRECINCT 41: Kim Kitsuragi is keeping a secret from you.
SUGGESTION: The strangeness revolves around his prized notebook. Previously, he had been somewhat free with it - letting you look at it over takeout, or flip through it for reference, or even once write notes in it while he was elbow-deep in corpse goo.
KIM KITSURAGI: That has all changed. Now, when you glance over in his direction while speaking to a suspect, he hunches over the notebook, curling in on it protectively. When you pass his desk, he flips it shut rapidly and puts a hand flat on it, as if keeping it from your prying eyes. He even has taken to bringing it into the bathroom with him.
CONCEPTUALIZATION: Only one thing makes sense: he’s drawing lewd artwork of the two of you in compromising positions.

Quick as a snake, Harry grabs his hand, spinning him around. He’s strong for a dead man. He puts Kim’s hand on his chest. “Then why don’t I breathe unless I’m thinking about it? Why doesn’t my heart beat?” Underneath Kim’s hand there is nothing. “Didn’t you show me how to breathe? In Martinaise. You did.” He looks at Kim suspiciously. “What do you know, Kim? Tell me. Please. I can handle it.”

Summary
This is ridiculous. Kim is fine. He's in his room at the Whirling, and is probably sound asleep. Are prophetic dreams even real?
LOGIC: No.
INLAND EMPIRE: Yes.
Harry tosses and turns for what feels like hours (twenty minutes). It's impossible to go back to sleep. He's restless, he's anxious, and he's still very sweaty.
DRAMA: You won't be able to rest until you see Kim. Even if you just knock on his door and hear his voice telling you to go back to bed, that would be enough.
ELECTROCHEMISTRY: You could also drink yourself to sleep. That would work just as well.
VOLITION: Well, it’s one or the other. You can’t get drunk and bother Kim after hours.
It's a bad idea, Harry thinks, even as he gets dressed.

“You’re having trouble sleeping… is the couch a problem?”
“I’m not kicking you out of your bed,” Harry said.
“You’re not.” He waited for something to happen, but nothing did, so he continued. “It’s wide enough. You can tell me about your nightmare.”
Another quiet whimper from the other room. Then, miraculously, a shuffling noise shortly followed by a pitch swath of humanoid shadow in the dark grey space of the doorframe. A tiny victory over self loathing, apparently. The negotiations that followed were done blindly and in hushed tones.
Harry's apartment is deeply fucked after his return from Martinaise. Kim is kind enough to let him stay over for a couple nights and gets hit in the face with a ton of inconvenient feelings-bricks.
