And to top it all off, she's drawn the ire and intrigue of Sephiroth, who seeks new purpose for the realm lovingly dubbed the Debug Room and even bullies her as a de facto editor in this new story of Gaia.
But the Rulers of the Outer Realms are always watching. Order must be preserved, lest the ancient wars of cataclysm resurge.

“Ignis,” Prompto says softly. “What should we—what do you want us to do?”
He managed last time, when Gladio went off on his ill-advised quest. Though he knew Gladio would be back, at some point then. Now all he can see in his mind is Gladio’s blank stare, the easy way he passed what they needed into their enemy's palm and ignored their pleas.
“Iggy,” Noct urges.
“We’ll be back to collect the reward within a week,” Ignis says, more confidently than he really feels.
They have to be able to survive on their own. There’s no other option.Alternatively: Gladio’s gone. Not off on a noble quest. Not dead, but something worse—now he’s their enemy.

"Whoa," Prompto breathes, coming to a halt. "Guys. Look at that."
Gladio stares. Whoa is right. The beach spread out before them is like a photo from the outdoor magazines his dad used to buy him as a kid: ocean waves lapping in a steady rhythm on the shore, glittering sand that stretches for miles in either direction. The moonlight paints everything in an almost eerie glow; when he crouches down to dig his fingers into the sand, bits of gold cling delicately to his nails.
"Holy shit."
"Beautiful?" Ignis guesses, a little wry, and Prompto and Gladio jolt. It's Prompto who scrambles over, the salt already heavy on Gladio's tongue; Ignis doesn't flinch back when he grabs his hand and presses it to the beach, too.
"It's amazing, Iggy! I--" He falters, and Gladio gets it, because how do you even describe someplace like this? "There's all this sand, it goes on forever! And the water is blue, so blue, like, like..."
"Like Noct's eyes," Gladio hears himself say. Prompto and Ignis turn to him, but he can't look away from the ocean. Just like Noct's eyes.
(It’s not easy, going from four to three. In an unexpected cottage by the sea, Gladio, Ignis, and Prompto have to try, anyways.)

This story, written waaaay back in 1999, follows the Final Fantasy VII party as they fight Shinra's new management. As they try to prevent the company from restarting the Mako reactors, they uncover a mysterious ritual that might bring back the one they lost and still hold dear.
Uploaded for posterity as all the sites that were hosting it are long gone, and the CD-R that holds it is probably about to suffer from bit rot.
This is strictly an action-adventure story, there is a tiny bit of relationship drama but it is definitely not the main focus.

Eyes closed in blissful sleep, the crystalline monuments are a mystery to all who see them, wondered about the world over. The Oracles of Tenebrae, the Kings of Lucis know nothing. The Six are silent on the matter, refusing to talk about the strange figures. They become more mysterious once they begin to disappear, leaving no trace.
It's as if they never existed in the first place.
