Summary
Dana had been in emergency medicine long enough to know that this conference was going to be a waste of time.
Still, she had packed one good black dress, two pairs of heels she already knew she would regret, and earrings she had not worn in years.
Not for the lectures. God, not for the lectures.
*
Dana and Robby attend a conference together. Things go downhill from there.

Summary
Abruptly, she becomes aware of how close they are. Of the way Jack’s arm is almost touching hers, of the way his gaze has softened into something less clinical.
“You’re staring,” Dana said.
“So are you.”
*
Neither of them meant for this to happen. That doesn’t change what it becomes.

Summary
“How are you?” he asks.
Dana looks at him. He doesn’t mean fine? hanging in there? surviving? He means the real thing.
She could tell him the truth. That every condolence card feels like a small fresh violence. That she keeps reaching for her phone to text Benji stupid little things and then remembering.
Instead, she says, “I’m upright.”
Robby’s mouth curves. “I noticed.”
*
Dana’s husband dies. In the aftermath, there are daughters to raise, shifts to work, and a colleague who refuses to let her fall apart alone.

Summary
July 2002. Dana is thirty-six and the mother of two little girls. A year has passed since her husband moved out and with her divorce nearly final, Dana is ready to live life on her own terms. As PTMC's newest charge nurse, she finds herself assigned to the day shift alongside a young physician, Dr. Michael Robinavitch, the newly-arrived 2002-2003 Emergency Department Medical Education Fellow. Intrigued by the young doctor's sensitive nature and brooding brown eyes and tired of always having to subordinate her desires to the demands of others, Dana seizes the opportunity to reach out for what she wants: him.

Summary
“You two are greedy today.”
“Can you blame us? How often do the three of us get to spend time together?” Jack asks.
Robby slides closer to her, wrapping his arm around her waist and giving her a kiss on the cheek.
“We miss you, is all,” Robby says.

Summary
Dana was already explaining: "Mohan was asking if this guy's single," she said, hooking a thumb Jack's way.
Robby lit up like he'd just gotten a gift, turning bemused eyes his way. "Oh, was she," he drawled, enjoying this.
Dana made an indulgent noise. "Apparently she's very taken with our dear Dr. Abbot and wondered if the feeling is mutual." They both looked to Jack then, Dana long-suffering, Robby delighted.
Fuck Jack's life, honestly.

"Really? Because I liked the first impression I got of you." He laughs. "And the second… and the third."

Summary
“Dana? Hey, girl. It's Adamson.”
Her eyes narrow despite his friendly tone. Why would Adamson be calling her himself? “What's going on, Doc?” She doesn't quite manage to keep the unease from her voice.
“How are you feeling? How's the baby?”
“We're doing great, both of us. But last time I checked, I still have another week and a half of maternity leave, so I know you would not be calling to ask me to pick up a shift, Monty.”
“No, no. Of course not.” There's a pause. “It's Robinavitch.”
Or, Robby gets sick on shift. Dana comes to pick him up. Pre-series.
