Despite the inner turmoil in the pits of Claire’s stomach, she can begrudgingly admit to herself that the dress does suit her. It’s a nice color — matches the warmth of her skin just right, falls just above her knees, straps contouring her collarbones.
At that moment, Claire notices Carmy, legs crossed, with his arm thrown around the back of Sydney’s chair, a little too familiar, a little too casual. She notices his eyes, captivated and entranced by the perfectly round curve of Sydney’s shoulders, of the back of her neck — he’s looking and he’s looking hard.
Sydney touches her arm. “Claire?”
“Oh, uh, sorry — what did you say?”
“I was asking you how things at the ER are going?”
