Summary
In this world, besides humans, there is another race called demi-humans. Though outwardly human, they possess animal characteristics from the species they share traits with. A man peacocks his way through the glamorous ballrooms. The tailored suits he wears, the fine colognes he chooses, and the fashionable accessories he owns do wonders for the green markings around his eyes.
But one would be a fool to think Albert Moriarty is a vain and harmless bird. Those iridescent markings are not feathers, but the cold hard scales of a cold-blooded creature.

First came the sound of furniture colliding, then the wretched gag of someone vomiting. Albert's voice cracked with worry. “Mycroft?”
Mycroft bolted upright, both hands locking around the grip of a revolver. The barrel aimed straight at Albert’s chest. Mycroft’s eyes were bloodshot and frantic, his skin drained to a deathly white. The sharp clack of the hammer being cocked penetrated through the room—
Then he shuddered and crumpled to the ground.
Being born a Holmes only guaranteed a life chained to the throne, not the power that came with it. This was Mycroft before he became The Government: an eighteen-year-old junior secretary at the bottom of the Parliamentary food chain.
“You’re insufferable even when you are young.” Albert snorted quietly and rubbed Mycroft’s hands in his. The young man's fingers had not yet developed the calluses that came from endless hours of writing papers.

Summary
Between the two Ms, Mycroft favors Louis, who possesses a mind much like his own. Louis is the embodiment of a surgeon’s knife: sharp, precise, and invariably calm. Meanwhile, Albert is the personification of dramatic flair, whimsical and dangerously unpredictable, with a concerning habit of charming and provoking his targets.
Their line of work does not need an enigma. Yet, an enigma is what stimulates Mycroft’s mind and heart.

“Like what?”
“Do you truly wish to know, Director?” Albert smiled, placing his glass beside Mycroft’s until the rims almost touched. Deliberately, he reached out and slid a finger beneath Mycroft's cuff.
Mycroft held himself perfectly still, yet every nerve within him was rioting.
“It was as though you desired to do this to me,” Albert murmured, tracing his finger along the curve of Mycroft’s wrist until he found the steady rhythm beneath the skin. He pressed there, feeling the pulse answer him.
Silence stretched. A thin veil had been pierced.
“Do you know what you’re doing, Moriarty?”

Neither Mycroft nor Albert intended to travel to Durham. Yet as the wheel of fate spun, they encountered one another.
