Summary
Rose volunteers for a nonprofit that rescues sex-trafficked omegas, and Shane thinks it's a great cause. He even attends their fundraising galas.
Then, one night, Rose calls to ask for a favor: She wants Shane to let a recently-rescued male omega live with him. In his apartment.
His name is Ilya, Rose explains, and the thing is, despite omega hormone levels, he acts and smells just like an alpha. He can't keep staying in an omega group home because he's scaring the other omegas and endangering the staff.
But he could live with Shane, Rose insists. "You're a big strong alpha hockey player, so he can't intimidate you physically. But also he needs to feel safe, which he can with you, because you're not like other alphas." She pauses. "You know?"
By which she means Shane has never had a full rut, his scent glands barely work, he can't form a knot, and he has no interest in sticking his dick in anyone. Which, whatever. It's fine.
But if being a failure as an alpha means he can help this omega, Ilya, who's apparently as much of a biological anomaly as Shane is…
Shane says yes.
And maybe it's a stupid decision. But he knows that it's also the right one.

It’s easy not to notice cancer, as a hockey player. Ilya is constantly sore from hits on the ice, takes six Advil every few days to deal with the joint pain. And sure, he used to only need two and a shot of something strong, but he figures that comes with getting older and the stress of missing Hollander, thinking about the rest of their lives stretched out between Montreal and Boston, never quite close enough to dream about something shaped like a future. Ten years was long enough. So he calls his agent to look into a team with more wiggle room in their salary cap–somewhere he can fall asleep next to Hollander more than five times a year, ideally– and books his flight to Ottawa. Two weeks at the cottage will never be long enough with Shane, he thinks, closing his laptop and grimacing at the pain flaring down his spine. But he takes a hot shower, nearly falls asleep against the bathroom tile, and he doesn’t even really notice it.

Summary
He knows no one would believe him. Plenty of guys get smacked around by their girlfriends. Pussy-whipped, dog-walked, whatever. She’s talking way too fast for Ilya to understand. It’s just one of her little harmless punishments, when he fucks up. Sometimes she ignores him just to watch him squirm and try to figure out what he did. They don’t talk about his family, and he doesn’t tell her that his father used to do the same thing. Bringing it up will just make her angrier.
It’s a little bit more than a slap this time. The edge of her knuckles connects with his nose and blood is running down his chin before he can blink. He runs his tongue over the smooth surface of his teeth on instinct like he always does after he hits the ice face first. Ilya always expects it, yet it always takes him by surprise.
After the news breaks about Shane and Rose, Ilya gets himself into something...simpler. But simpler turns confusing, and then manipulative, and then violent. And that's when people start noticing.
