Summary
Grace doesn't have an exact timeline of his decline, but he does remember being only four months out when he finally notices. His nails are brittle and breaking, his eyes have been gaunt for a while. He's the thinnest he's ever been in his life and just carrying equipment around the lab is starting to wind him. He's able to ignore it for a good while. To smile too widely at Rocky and distract him with the newest game or movie to watch.
Grace is in the lab when it happens. When he's finally forced to face the facts. Looking back, he'll call himself vain for that very moment being the turning point. He's doing his routine checks in the morning in between gulps of Taumoeba slurry. He runs his hands through his hair. it's a mindless action, one he does without realizing most days. When his fingers fall away, a chunk of hair follows. Like his nails, his hair has gotten brittle and prone to breaking. It hasn't just fallen out before. Not in such a large quantity or all a once.
Ryland Grace is dying.
The trip back to Erid isn't all sunshine and rainbows. Grace faces his mortality.

Summary
Grace laughs, the bath's level swiftly rising with the addition of so much mass. "I thought this was disgusting, you're going to join me in here?"
Rocky blurts a huffy sound, taking care as he pulls his remaining limbs into the bath, crouching over Grace's legs. "Inside xenonite suit," he says like he's explaining something very obvious (which he is), "No touching cold, dirty bath. Humans made of water, leaking all day long, then still need to go sit in more water. Crazy." He shivers his torso morosely, sending Grace into a laugh that echoes sharply around the bowl of the tub.

Rocky pauses in his building. Then, with a sound that seems closer to a chuckle than a laugh, he says, "guess."

But as long as Rocky remains interested in only him, then Grace is fine with fulfilling his curiosities about human sex.

The man turned toward me, he was wearing a heavyweight parka over a green jumpsuit uniform, and for some reason, I couldn't stop staring at his eyes behind those thick glasses. It was also green. But not the pale kind or the dull kind. It was bright green. The sort of eyes that immediately grabbed your attention and refused to let go.
Then I noticed the expression attached to those eyes.
Oh. That was definitely not gratitude I am seeing over there, buddy.
Or, Grace wakes from a coma with no memory of the events of Hail Mary, but this grumpy engineer who can turn him into a complete mess somehow feels hauntingly familiar.

“Oh. Well, Rockett is my government issued surname. But I prefer the name Rocky. Has charm to it, yes? I also respond to Rock on occasion.”
He holds out a hand.
“It is nice to meet you!”
