Summary
The Order tells the world that James and Lily Potter died heroes.
The truth is much messier.
After Lily’s death on a mission orchestrated by Dumbledore, James disappears, determined to uncover Voldemort’s secrets and destroy him for good. Hidden from the public, presumed dead by his friends, and furious at the man who covered everything up, James spends two years becoming someone entirely new.

Regulus took a step forward without thinking.
“James?”
or..Three years after James Potter disappears and is presumed dead, the war keeps moving, but the people closest to him don’t. James is alive, but conditioned, distant, and reacting like someone who has learned that recognition is dangerous. Regulus just wants James back.

Summary
“Oh baby,” James says when Regulus walks out of the back area and into the waiting area. His cheeks are puffed up and he walks a little unsteady but otherwise seems fine. James wraps one of their arms around his waist to help keep him steady before scheduling another appointment for him to get his stitches out, before helping him out of the building and into the car, “How are you feeling, my love?” Regulus lifts his hand and shakes it back and forth while humming, “It’s probably hard to talk, isn’t it. I’m sorry.”

Regulus gets his wisdom teeth removed and James takes care of him during the healing process.

“C’mon Reg,” Barty whines, practically putting all of this weight on Regulus where his arm is thrown over the shorter’s shoulder, “We’re all going, it’s going to be fun.”
Evan hums, “Besides, what better way to spend your Halloween?”
“I could spend my Halloween curled up on the couch watching Nightmare Before Christmas with tea and my sketchbook, I think that is a perfectly viable Halloween activity.”
“But it’s not fun.” Barty whines once again.
“James will be there. I heard that they’re wearing a skirt this year, too.”
“And how do you know that?” Regulus asks, his interest successfully peaked.
Pandora seems to know it, they make a whole show of being nonchalant about it, dropping the clothes in their hands on their twin’s lap, “They’re doing a group costume, Lily was telling me that she’s going as Daphne and they’re going as Velma because Sirius dared them to.”
And Regulus holds out for longer than he thought he would, and it seems the same thought passes through Pandora, before he finally groans, “An hour.”

The group convinces Regulus to go to a Halloween party, where he happens to run into James... James who's wearing a skirt.

“Sirius?” Regulus asks, pushing the door to his brother’s room open after Sirius tells him too, “Did you invite Re- nevermind.”
“What were you gonna ask?” Sirius asks, furrowing his brows a bit. He’s sprawled out on his bed, Remus leaning against the headboard with a book in his hands, looking lazily at Regulus.
The younger hums, “There’s someone knocking at the door and I was going to ask if you had invited Remus over… I see that he’s already here?”
“And you just… haven’t answered the door yet?” Sirius hums.
“You and I both know that I don’t open the door unless I’m one hundred percent sure I know who it is and I want to interact with them.”
The older brother rolls his eyes and pulls out his phone to check their doorbell camera, “It’s our neighbor. Go open the fucking door.”

In a world where Regulus and Sirius manage to escape their shitty parents and find a place for themself, Regulus gets into beekeeping. In a world where they're forever away from their neighbors, Regulus is shocked to hear a knock on the door that isn't from Remus, only to find their incredibly attractive neighbor that he's never met before asking for a bee-related favour.
