Convinced that Tyrael's sacrifice to safeguard Sanctuary is unjustly condemned, Auriel defies the rules of Heaven and descends to the mortal plane to offer her aid, abandoning her divine status to embody hope among the struggling humans.
Meanwhile, in the depths of the Burning Hells, Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, learns of Auriel's descent. Seeing an opportunity to exploit the turmoil within the ranks of the High Heavens and to crush the growing alliance led by Tyrael, Mephisto prepares to unleash his demonic legions upon Sanctuary once again.
