Shadow lowered his eyes and sipped his coffee. His formative years had been over before they had even begun, and there was no going back. He was supposed to be a hardened government agent now. He was supposed to hate humanity and scorn the very idea of imitating their lives… but a small, stunted part of him felt differently.
At first, the sight of children used to remind Shadow of a little girl he had known more than 50 years ago. But now, the sight reminds him of something else. Namely, the fact that he never had a childhood or a real family, and he still doesn't know how to feel about it. He's already moved on and put his past behind him... or so he thought. How are you supposed to grieve something that you never had to begin with?

In another universe, Shadow was created by alchemists who dwelled among the stars. He now spends his days as a hunter, travelling the world to safeguard it from threats, whether they be human or monstrous. But when the hunters' guild asks him to investigate a case of unusual activity in a desolate, rain-soaked town, he is left with more questions than answers. Rumour has it that a monster dwells in the castle above the town, and so begins a decadent, dangerous dance between a battle-scarred hunter and an alluring femme fatale, both of whom are willing to use any means necessary to survive this star-crossed encounter.

‘I…’ Shadow trailed off, and a familiar heaviness settled in his chest. He wasn’t supposed to burden Maria with his problems. He also didn’t think that he was supposed to feel anxious about going to bed. Perfected beings weren’t supposed to experience insomnia. He rubbed one of his inhibitor rings with his thumb, sitting in silence.
Shadow finds himself wandering the corridors of Space Colony Ark, unable to sleep, and he sees a light beneath the door of Maria's bedroom. When he realises that he's not the only one awake at this time of night, he goes in to check on her, and his concern soon turns into a moment of vulnerability.
