A handful of red blooms flutter to the dated tile floor as Juliana hauls an overflowing box of fabric roses and a stepladder down the creaky old stairs from their apartment into the stockroom, kicks open the door, and staggers out into the shop.
Trailing behind her and gathering up the straggler blossoms in its teeth, Sprigatito replies with an inquisitive little “Mraow?”
“Really! I’m not!”
The look her Pokémon gives her is…dubious. "Mrrrp."

The lifelong owners, whom Juliana considered family, were nowhere to be found, replaced by a pair of teenagers who seemed wholly unprepared to even see customers, let alone serve them. And the menu, unchanged for generations, had been stripped down to a single item and subjected to a staggering fifty thousand percent price hike. Life in Oak Ridge was everything she’d wanted- something exciting, something new, something worth chasing after.
She hadn’t anticipated the abundance of horses or the eclectic townsfolk, though. She especially hadn’t anticipated the run-down house, the ride-or-die friendships, or the weekly horse riding lessons with a certain green-haired someone.

The roots coil around themselves and eventually start to rot and kill the plant from within. The roots need room to grow, which is why we’re planting these in this bigger space now. But if you replant them too early, before the roots can develop, they’ll die from that, too— they’ll be too fragile. It’s a balancing act; you need to keep them in their starter trays long enough to develop their roots, but not so long that it starts to inhibit their growth and hurt them. Enough freedom to grow, and enough stability to thrive.”

Summary
May is an energetic magazine columnist who walks into a bar, but in lieu of a punchline, she finds a pesky couples-only policy in place for Valentine’s day that prevents her from entering. Drew is a stranger who has a cynical outlook on romance, but the joke’s on him when he finds himself volunteering to be May’s date for the evening so that she can get in and get her article written. It’s just a single fake date. A work obligation, really; a one-evening-only performance that neither of them will have to attend ever again.
But the acting’s coming a little too naturally, even after the curtain call.
Or, a fake dating fic in which a chance meeting with a stranger, a brief agreement to be partners in crime for the evening, and an unexpectedly real spark begins to blur the line between facades and fondness. All the world’s a stage, and method acting is dangerous business.
