Summary
After a second encounter with Arthur Manning, Edwin needles Robin about him.
‘Shocked as I’m sure we all are to discover I wasn’t a blushing virgin when we met,’ Robin murmured, when they came up for air, ‘might I remind you that one of your ex-lovers is our very regular dinner guest?’
‘That’s different,’ Edwin told him, tracing the bow of his upper lip with a finger. ‘Jack still barely puts up with me. Manning looks at you like he’d like to have you for dessert and then go back for seconds.’
‘He’s happily married, as I understand it.’
‘Still,’ Edwin said. ‘Only I get to have you for dessert.’

Summary
He is tidying his drawers and socks into the wardrobe, idly wondering if that is a spell Edwin might be able to conjure up—a curtain of sorts that would allow them true privacy—when he hears a gasp. Not from the direction of the door that leads out into the hallway, but instead from the opposite corner of the room, between the fireplace and the window. A corner—he is almost completely certain of this—that used to very much be an ordinary wall. Solid, lined in the same dark green wallpaper set into wooden panels as the rest of the room.
A wall that is now, instead, sporting a wide open archway.
—
Months after the events of A Marvellous Light, Robin and Edwin go back to Sutton—where the house welcomes them wholeheartedly—and then, well. Edwin puts on a show.

Summary
The Russet Room, Pendersleigh Park, Wiltshire, night of 13–14 August 1913.
'It seems rather strange.' Words that had seemed to refer to Scudder’s plan to emigrate to the Argentine suddenly took on a new meaning, like a secret code that Maurice had failed to crack until now. Yes, it was strange – and uncanny: this inadmissable, overpowering attraction between them; Scudder suddenly in Maurice’s bed; the strange alchemy of their bodies together.

Good is the objective here. Good is what’s wanted, the reason for that determined look in Neil’s eyes. Good is the goal.
Not sick, or bad, or whatever other horrible feeling that Andrew can chew up and swallow down whole.
