He figured it was natural, kind of—well, not natural, but he and Steve spent a lot of time together, and Steve didn’t get so much attention from girls, which was a crying shame because he was a good guy and a girl could do a lot worse. But it meant maybe Steve got a bit confused, because sometimes he would look at Bucky with this look. This bright, astonished look, like he was seeing something so good he couldn’t quite believe it was real. It made Bucky squirm inside, a little.

Really helped me understand Sam as well as post-Endgame Bucky. Sam’s very complicated feelings toward Steve, Bucky, and the shield were wonderfully showcased in these stories, without simplifying or smoothing any of their edges. Very believable Sam/Bucky.

OMG this story is EVERYTHING for Captain Carter fans. Very interesting take on Natasha as well: brings out the edges in the character as well as some of her similarities with Bucky. Heartbreaking backstory Steve/Peggy I didn't expect but, DAMN, it got me. PEGGY IS HOT LIKE BURNING, and the relationship is excellent and hot and I can't BELIEVE this fic was written before What If because it has a lot of that energy while giving both Peggy and Natasha a deeper story.

There’s an answer on the tip of his tongue, one that he’ll deliver with a cocky grin and a half-laugh and a little shake of his head. But Bucky is exhausted and hungry and so sore it hurts to move, and one of the guys in their platoon fucking died yesterday. His mouth tastes like iodine water and his feet hurt and none of it’s going to get better any time soon, and all at once Bucky misses Steve so badly he can barely see straight.

“Pregnant?” asks Steve, perking up like a dog that’s just been offered a treat, and not just any dog, one of those wholesome happy ones like a golden retriever or whatever. Maybe the guy’s just looking for any bit of good news right now, given it’s been one nasty surprise after another the past few days. Tony kind of does want to offer him a treat, or pet him, or something. That’s really not a good enough reason for what Tony says next though.

Steve had gone fully red-faced with pedantic altar-boy fury. “Did your computer forget how to Google translate?” he bellowed, sticking his head up and over. Bucky yanked him down again. “What are you even trying to say?”
Bucky tried to shake the sparkles off the grenade he had been planning on lobbing over the divider. “It sounded like Latin to me,” he said reasonably, pursing his lips and frowning at the explosive. It dripped a sparkle, and a puff of purple smoke curled up where it hit the concrete.
“That’s because you spent Sunday school flirting with Sarah Cunningham,” Steve accused, bobbing back up to throw his shield and ducking back down to dodge a shining ball of blue light. “You wouldn’t know Latin if it came up and kissed you on your ugly mug.”
“I’d sure know it if Sarah Cunningham did, though.” Bucky grinned, struck by the memory. “That gal really knew what she was doing.”
