Grace shakes his head, bringing himself back into the moment. “Sorry, Rock. What’d you say?”
“What Grace want for birthday,” Rocky repeats himself, tone more insistent this time.
“Y’know,” Grace says, deciding an unrealistic idea is better than no idea at all, “I think I want a hug from my best friend. If you can figure that one out, you’ll never have to get me another birthday gift again.”
“Rocky will continue to get Grace gifts anyway.” Grace flushes at the declaration, which he does not want to address. Rocky is quiet for a moment after, tapping his claws on the ground in thought. And before Grace can tell him he was just joking, don’t worry about it, just make him some xenonite barbells so he doesn’t lose these muscles so fast, Rocky is perking up and skittering to leave the room again. “Rocky know how to get Grace gift! Will take some time. Late gift. Will make up for it next Earth year.”
(Or, the one where Rocky's birthday present to Grace ends up getting a little out of hand.)

He’s actively stepping around Rocky, stepping over him, and heading towards the other end of the lab, cabinets and rows of samples. He could find something else here to look at, check up on the Taumoeba farms…
Except, he doesn’t even make it to the threshold to cross the hallway of the ship. His feet stop. A complete, precise standstill.
Rocky had chittered at him, a short burst of notes, monosyllabic in Eridian despite the layers of chords. He registered it not as any word, yet the command still struck.
Stay.
Heeled. Like a dog.
And it wasn’t by any doing of Grace’s own decision making.

“I guess, um,” I say, licking my lips as I stall. When did my mouth get so dry? “I don’t know why, don’t ask me why, but… you’re… obviously a lot stronger than me, and I guess that… activated some part of my brain that’s… into that, I guess.” I wring my hands, fussing with the arms of my jumpsuit tied around my waist- anything to avoid looking up at Rocky. “It’s just… been a long time since I’ve, uh. Mated with anyone, on Earth, and I think I’ve just been a bit- frustrated, so my body’s just reacting to whatever it can. Don't- don’t get me wrong, I know it probably doesn’t make a lot of sense, I mean- you could literally crush me if you wanted to, but- for some reason, I… I guess it was just… exciting. To me.” I finish lamely.
Rocky stares at me, as much as a being with no eyes and 360 degrees of echolocation ability can stare. I am acutely aware that he can hear every beat of my heart, every hitched breath. He can probably sense the pinpricks of sweat that bead on my forehead. I swallow, my heart hammering in my chest at the silence.
Rocky finally tilts his carapace ever so slightly. “You are aroused by strength in mate, question?”

Rocky hesitates to speak for a moment. “New word: suspected mates.”
Grace’s world tilts on its axis. There’s just no way that’s right. He reaches up and drags his beanie off of his head. Only then did it feel right to implore, “…Your people think you and I are mates?”

Ryland Grace spends years in space falling in love with his best friend and keeping it secret, convinced Rocky could not possibly feel the same. Rocky, always on the same page, is conducting identical research.
It’s why they’re such a great team.

“Hey! It’s a lot up here, okay? It’s a normal response to stress.” He rubs a hand over his face. “Okay, I cried a lot down there, too. But not in class! Not if I could help it. But having to say goodbye, gosh, I’ve never been good at that.” Grace laughs, but it sounds sad. His mouth is shut firmly, and he leans against my ball. He’s so soft, his body melds to the side of the xenonite with ease. “I can’t imagine what a mess I’ll be when—” he cuts himself off, but I know what was coming next.
I’m not sure how I’ll be when we say goodbye either. It didn’t seem like it’d matter so much at first, after all, if we part ways, it means we succeeded. I’d be going back to Erid, to Adrian, to home. But I’d be leaving behind Grace. The thought of that is unpleasant. It sinks deep in me; the emotion is painfully familiar. It’s been a long time since I’ve had anyone to mourn losing anyone again. I don’t want to think about it, I’m not ready.

There is no way Rocky had actually said what Grace thought he heard, just now. “You…you want to what? For science?!”
Rocky tsks, like Grace has taken the implications way out of proportion. “Experiment,” he stresses. “Logical, methodical experiment. You make it sound… unreasonable.”
Grace explodes. “Unreasonable! Unreasonable! You want to stick your hand up my ass!”

Summary
Ryland Grace is a coward. Always has been. He doesn't take risks, and his failed scientific career, failed friendships, and failed romantic life don't prove otherwise. But he saved Rocky, whether that be out of selflessness or the fear of being alone again. He took a risk.
Grace is glum in the midst of waiting for Taumoeba-06 to evolve (any day now), burdened by loneliness and touch-starvation. Attentive Rocky notices this in Grace's demeanor and checks in on him. Grace confesses how much he misses physical contact and surprisingly discovers the feeling is mutual.
Rocky engineers a solution. Something that will drastically change the course of their relationship.
Or
Rocky engineers a method for him and Grace to hug. This escalates to Rocky pleasuring Grace, a misunderstood confession of love (language barrier), regular physical contact (among other things), and reaching a mutual understanding of what their relationship means.
