“They’ve been fighting a lot recently, huh?” She eventually exhales and he can feel the guilt of the last few months simmering, rolling off her in slow, mournful waves. The Aglaeca, the shroud, Odette, all things Nancy resolutely claims responsibility for and drags around with her like she carried the Wraith all those months. “How long do they normally last?”
He shrugs.
She tilts her head at him. “Want to crash at mine?”
Or; Ace crashes at the Drew household after being kicked out and Bess becomes a third wheel roommate (she's not mad about it).

“You should talk to Nick!” Bess is hastily pushing napkins across the booth to George.
Nancy watches as a lock of hair slips from behind Ace’s ear, drifting over his forehead to curl above one eyebrow. Her fingers twitch around her glass of soda, the muscle memory from the ghost of a life never lived reminding her how easy it would be to reach out and push it back-
“What would I say?” George wails next to her, trying to catch her running eyeliner with crumpled napkins stained with Bess’ strawberry daiquiri spills.
“That you love him.” Nancy answers, not fully realising she’s saying it out loud, words aimed at the top of Ace’s head, at the curve of hair bobbing in front of his eyes.
Or; every curse has its loopholes and Nancy never did learn to leave well enough alone.

“You have a collect call from the Hampden County Correctional Center. Do you accept the charges?”
It’s mid-morning on a dreary Monday and Nancy leans against her kitchen wall with a sigh, wondering if she’ll ever have the kind of life where she doesn’t routinely get surprise jailhouse calls.
Then she recognizes the eager way she’s pressing the phone against her ear, the little thrill of a burgeoning mystery buzzing in her blood, and wonders if she even wants to.
“Yes,” she says. “I’ll accept the charges.”
There’s a click and a pause, and then—
“Heya, Nance.”

“I can’t ask you to do this.”
Ace is sitting behind Florence’s steering wheel, hands at 10 and 2 and gripping it so tightly they look like topographical maps — tendons as mountain ridges, veins winding like mighty rivers. His face is lit only by the lamppost on the curb; it leaves half of his profile cloaked in deep black, the other painted a bloodless, muted yellow.
For the first time, Nancy can look at him and see that he’s older than her. The extra years are drawn in the lines framing his full lips, in the purplish shadows haunting his hollow eyes.
“You’re not asking,” she says, clicking the seatbelt around her waist and staring straight ahead, not allowing herself a final glimpse of her house, squatting familiar and forsaken in the rearview mirror. “Let’s go.”

But since her time in the dreamscape, the heat is almost too much. She is overwhelmed by his proximity, afraid of being burned. But she can’t quite bring herself to push him away.

“Satisfied,” Ace says, and frowns. “What does that mean?”
George lets out a little choked snort and Nick turns an interesting shade of red.
“Like—satisfied,” Bess says miserably. “When she burned the dress, the smoke contained all of the, the unresolved lust of the women who’d worn it—so to fix it, you make sure the woman, er—that she—look, it’s actually kind of feminist, in a way!”
