Summary
Everything was on fire, and yet Hal had never felt so cold in his life.
The chill had come over him the moment that the comm link had gone dead–a viscous static that pervaded Hal’s senses. The line grated on the very marrow of his bones, slowly scraping up his tendons and carving out a nothingness.
Snake–no, Dave–had been in the tanker when it had gone up, an explosion that had shaken the very sound barrier, a destruction that, if someone had asked Hal, he’d compare to what the Big Bang itself certainly must have sounded like.
Was Dave dead?

This isn’t supposed to happen, he chants deliriously in his head while his throat howls out the only word it can utter ever since he scrambled out of their car. Chlorine clings to his tongue.
