Nines just tilts his head the slightest bit, a provocation: Well?
Gavin is incandescent with fury. “You know what?” he snaps. “Fine.”
He doesn’t need hindsight to conclude the obvious; he knows full well in the moment that this is where he lets things spiral out of control. When he sets his jaw and yanks his tee up over his head, left in his undershirt like he’s about to start a fight, it’s crystal-clear to him that he’s stepping past a point of no return. But—
—there is no but. What threadbare excuse does he have? He made me do it, Your Honor. I was so irritated that I had no choice but to take my clothes off. Gavin leaves his desk and throws himself onto the nest of pillows at the head of his bed, zooms in with the webcam until the focus returns to the lens, and parts his knees.

Summary
People didn’t like Gavin Reed. Gavin Reed didn’t like people. It went together like gin and tonic, you can’t have one without the other. Fate decided that Nines hated him and he hated Nines and so they kept playing their game by these set rules, never questioning the absurdity.
Maybe it was a coincidence that six months into their partnership, Gavin distinctly remembered rules are meant to be broken. It turned Gavin into pretending to dislike Nines. On the flip side, it turned Nines into a dense idiot with a crush, unable to grasp the concept of love. Both in utter denial.
Gravity works against them, draws them closer at a frightening pace. The android appears less opposed to it. How long will it take Gavin to realize he has to pull the door and stop pushing it like an imbecile?
