OMG IT’S SO GOOD BEST BUNNYTEETH FIC

2 "Great!" Caine clapped his hands together and suddenly looked at the rabbit a little more closely. "Oh, and... Jax...?" He motioned for the bunny to lower himself toward him.

Jax frowned and leaned in reluctantly.

    "Yes?" He asked.

    "Your glitter is smudged."

Jax could feel Caine's cold thumb touch his warm face.

    Summary

It’s been a few days since The Favorite Character Awards.

Pomni has been through a number of bizarre things during her time in the circus. Candy truck chases, angel head horrors, minimum wage labor, athletic events, gun-filled battle royales. But none of these come close to what she witnesses on a seemingly innocent day full of beach-filled fun: Caine attempting to take his own life.

After managing to stop him, Pomni takes it upon herself (and is borderline forced to by Bubble) to help keep Caine’s mental state intact by engaging in improvised therapy sessions with him. After all, if Caine died, what would happen to the circus? And to the humans that lived within it? This was her only concern at first. But as Caine opens up to her more through these sessions, she realizes just how much the AI is hurting and how long he has been harboring these negative emotions.

Turns out Caine needs more help than she thought.

He's just as trapped in this game as they are. And worse.

    5 ToT
Caine’s voice cracked a bit as he squeaked out, “That is the nicest thing a player has ever said to me…”

Pomni bit back the immediate, cynical comment: That’s the saddest thing I’ve ever heard.

    8 lmfao
Her eyes narrowed slightly in suspicion. “Do you really mean that, or are you just being nice?”

“Both!” he declared without hesitation, his voice booming in pure sincerity.

10 my heart is in millions of pieces

    13 the crew finds out

    15 LMFAO
“If we both need therapy, we shall simply merge the sessions!"

"Merge them?" Pomni asked, tilting her head. "How do you—"

With a sharp snap of Caine’s fingers, the therapy couch groaned and stretched. The fabric pulled and expanded, the wooden frame lengthening until it was several feet longer. He then floated into the air and drifted over to the couch, plopping himself down next to Pomni.

"There!" he announced, getting comfortable. "Plenty of room for two! You lie down there, I lie down here, and we shall have a communal debrief! It’s like a sleepover, but with more depression!"

    16 apology tour buicfbcish

    17 Caine is so sweet
"For you!" he chirped. Before Pomni could take it, Caine leaned forward and wrapped his arms around her in a quick but loving hug. It was clumsy and a bit too tight, his dentures clicking against the top of her hat, but it was remarkably warm.

    18 lmao
Caine pulled on his eyes, stretching the optic nerves like rubber bands, and groaned, “You’re using my own rules against me. That is...that is very logical of you. And very, very annoying.”

LMFAO "I want a wife," Caine said suddenly.

    Pomni gawked at him.

And Kinger laughed. Warmly and loudly, and he didn't stop.

"I want a wife who can make me kind and cheerful and protected like you," he continued. "I want someone willing to love me."

    OMG IT’S FINALLY OPENLY ADDRESSED
Man, Caine was horrible at tact. He always said everything in the most blunt way he could. Regardless of whether there was a better way to say what he meant...

Maybe he wasn't doing it on purpose.

    Pomni wanted to slap herself.

Of course he wasn't doing it on purpose! He was probably neurodivergent or something.

3 ToT “You could’ve heard a pin drop, and watching the silence, Caine had a thought so inappropriate that it made his programming squeeze at his mind.

He really, really wished he could swear.”

    5 :/

7 love the autistic representation lpodguf

8 Caine… didn’t really understand consent. And it wasn’t hard to see why. He was a tool, created by people who’d never dreamed that they might have to have a real conversation with him or negotiate with him or treat him like an equal, and who, if they had, likely wouldn’t have understood how much harder Caine viewing himself as disposable made those conversations.

12 They were still griping when they got back to the tent, and he’d had enough.

“- all day! I knew something was off, but I just didn’t see it. That [YAP]ing Kinger. If he actually tries to go through with this, I’ll rip off his – “

“Oh, for crying out loud, would you shut up?”

“[ZZZ] off, Jax. You don’t get – “

“I get it fine! Caine wants to kill himself, and you’ve decided that the most important part of that is that he didn’t tell you.” He pulled off one of their arms and brandished it, forcing his tone back into something more sarcastic. “You’re not the important part here.

16 LOVE THE AUTISTIC REPRESENTATION Caine is much calmer when he fidgets with something
“At any rate, what Caine needed was an artificial buffer that could be activated at will, one that would allow him to slow down and see the new code as something to be incorporated on a reasonable timescale instead of an emergency that had to be perfect right away.“

19 “ What if he needed discomfort to learn properly? Who was he to think otherwise?

He was a program that had never, until two days ago, been edited without it making him a little more tense and wound-up and terrified of failure at whatever new task he’d been assigned. When it hadn’t been necessary.”

24 LMFAO “Scratch hadn’t written comments at all. If he hadn’t abstracted years ago, Kinger could’ve killed him.”

30 “There was an even worse possibility, one that he tried not to dwell on in favor of the more comforting hypothesis that he was broken: what if he wasn’t? What if Kinger had gone into his code and not found any real problems? What if everything – his failures to communicate and make adequate adventures, his irrational interests outside of his job, that bug that made him afraid of negative stimulus – wasn’t a sign of damage? What if he was fine, and he was just making up excuses to be hopelessly terrible at everything?”

34 it’s so autism-coded “It was a bit alarming to learn how closely he was paying attention. They’d assumed that he was oblivious because he didn’t give a shit or just couldn’t pay attention in general. Instead – well, his attention span was awful, but he paid more attention than they’d given him credit for. He knew that Ragatha rubbed her arm when she was nervous, and that Zooble always stood between Jax and Gangle, and that talking about abstraction was a touchy topic with all of them. What he was missing was the connective tissue of why.”
