At last it was summer. You know, those late august nights where it’s neither too hot nor too cold? Those ones, where you’d laugh all night under the starry sky. One of those nights was in Avery’s garden, surrounded by his family. He hadn’t been able to spend New Year’s Eve with them due to school and… Other things. But it was the big holidays now and most importantly; His birthday! Avery was reaching his 22nd birthday.
Now he's going to Florida to spend his birthday with his family... Not everything goes according to plan.

Avery slammed his heel on his good hand. By reflex he tried to pull away, but then he pointed his blade at his throat.
It was here, in their traditional sparring matches, that decided the winner. This had been such a wonderful fight. Anticipatory heat pooled low in his gut.
Avery always fought well, but today especially he was in his element. He looked so good in the sun, all breathless from the exertion. Being matted in red blood was new, but it was well-fought and he decided he liked how it marred his armor and clothes underneath and dyed his bare hands.

It was inevitable that eventually, while accompanying Avery to Hypixel for a skywars game, Derek forgets they're not alone and gets way too excited when he's left facing Avery one-on-one. This is, objectively, a minor event. People get sick. It happens. Derek knows this. Derek has, in point of fact, access to a comprehensive working knowledge of human immune response, viral transmission vectors, and the general trajectory of a common respiratory illness, all of which indicates that this is not serious and will resolve itself within five to seven days with rest and fluids.
Derek knows all of this.
Derek is not handling it.
(Avery keeps saying he's fine. He is doing the dishes while saying he's fine. He is refolding the blanket on the couch while saying he's fine. He is reaching for the mop while saying he's fine and Derek is standing in the kitchen doorway watching this and experiencing something in the vicinity of his sternum that he does not have a precise word for but which rhymes with heartbreak.
Fies is sitting on the sick person. This is not useful. This is, in fact, the opposite of useful. Derek has told her this. She has not moved.)Series

He looks at it on a Thursday morning and thinks: I'll just buzz it. Clean start. Efficient. He tells Avery this.
Avery says: sit down.
Forty-five minutes later Derek is on a kitchen chair with detangling spray in his hair and Avery's hands working through it section by section, from the ends up, slowly and correctly. Every time the comb catches something, every time, without exception, for forty-five minutes, Avery says sorry. Even when Derek says it doesn't hurt. Even when Derek says Avery, you don't have to apologize. Even when Derek says he genuinely cannot feel it.
Sorry. Sorry. Is that okay. Sorry.
Somewhere in the middle of it Derek realizes he has, at some point he cannot identify, stopped bracing. He doesn't know when it happened. He realizes it only by its absence.
He has to close his eyes.
