Summary
“My name is Veritas Ratio.”
It was a pointless offering. What good was the name of a scholar to a boy in iron shackles? Soon, the boy would procure another wound, and this time, Ratio would not be there to halt the infection. He was a man of vast influence, intellect, and interest, yet sitting on the edge of this cot, he had never felt so utterly powerless.
The clever boy raised a hand to his own chest, his gemstone eyes catching the dim light. “Kakavasha.”
A decade after the IPC declares sovereignty over Sigonia-IV, Dr. Veritas Ratio accompanies Oswaldo Schneider on a diplomatic mission to discuss reparations. Stepping into the wrong door, Ratio expects to find a local liaison. Instead, he finds a bleeding Avgin boy and a circular chessboard.

Ratio’s foot taps on the floor underneath the table, and he takes a deep breath. “A decade worth of suppressants has built up in your body, if I foolishly provide you with more to indulge your avoidant tendencies, you will die. There is no gamble in it.”
“That would be an awful way to go then. What do you suggest I do then, doc?” Aventurine’s smile hides the anxiety ridden thoughts swirling in his mind, knowing the possible excruciating pain he would undoubtedly experience, and how he would be utterly vulnerable to all forms of ambush. Maybe he should buy another hidden house to retreat in? Hiring people sounds good too if he fools the IPC enough that it’s for security purposes. At worst, he could rent an alpha–
The thought immediately makes him nauseous, and he gulps it down his throat.
“I could offer my assistance.”
“Huh?” Did that Ratio just…?

Curious, Akutagawa noted the sluggish curling and uncurling of Atsushi's fingers and the deepening furrow between his brows.
What was most perplexing, however, was when the tears started falling.
“What the hell, Jinko.”
Atsushi's eyes snapped wide open, gaze still unseeing and emanating a profound sense of resignation. His chest shuddered with a violent gasp of air: up and down and repeat. His gray hair was plastered weakly to his forehead and to the sides of his face, his cheeks faint, with trails of tears tracking down to his chin.
