Shane took a deep breath. “You didn’t mean to hurt me.”
Ilya felt the words like a sucker punch to the stomach. He swallowed hard, fighting to keep his voice level. “I hurt you?”
___________An offhand comment from Yuna triggers a conversation between Shane and Ilya about that night in Ilya's Vegas penthouse after the MLH awards. Ilya knew he had fucked up, but maybe not how much. Maybe now he can make up for it.

Shane breathed out a heavy sigh, letting his arms fall to cradle Ilya’s hug around him. He nodded, resigned.
Ilya nodded back against Shane’s neck, pressing his lips to the bare skin at the curve of his neck.
Shane deliberated. “But we can’t be out too late.”
Ilya smiled and bit his neck. “Okay, Grandma.”
“Ow! We’re going to be too cold in these,” Shane complained.
“I will keep you warm.”

Die Hände hat er in seine Haare und an seinen Hinterkopf geschoben. Seine Finger bewegen sich in seinen Haaren, auf seiner Kopfhaut hin und her, so als müsse er sie irgendwie beschäftigen. Seine Ellenbogen sind auf seine Knie gestützt.
Leo weiß nicht, was los ist. Doch er spürt ein Reißen an seinem Herzen bei diesem Anblick.

Leo hält inne, als sein Blick auf Adam fällt. Das warme Außenlicht – und Leo fragt sich einmal mehr, wie es sein kann, dass ein Haus so kalt und die dazugehörige Außenbeleuchtung so warm wirken kann – lässt Adam ganz weich aussehen. Weich und klein und verloren, wie er da auf der Kante seiner Liege sitzt und Streichhölzer in den Pool schnipst.
Oder: Es hätte einfach Leo sein müssen, der zu Adam an den Pool kommt.
