"I know you've been in love with Lily since you were eleven, but still… you have to admit, a man as attractive as you — not that I'm staking any claim, but you could be with anyone."
Or me, Regulus wanted to add, a man, for instance, but something stopped him.
"Why her specifically?" Regulus continued, not looking away. "And why that ridiculous rule? Honestly, who even invents something like that?"
"Because Lily is special," James said, reverently. "She's the only girl I've loved since I was a child."
Regulus felt something clench painfully in his chest. He knew those words. He had never wanted to hear them aloud. Getting James Potter is difficult when you are not Lily Evans.
"And so…" James went on, "if I'm going to wake up beside someone for the first time, I'd want it to be her."
He fell silent. Then he turned fully toward Regulus, lying on his side now with his head propped on his hand.
"I don't want that to happen in some casual arrangement," he added, looking Regulus straight in the eye, "that doesn't mean anything."

Summary
Regulus Black doesn’t believe in second chances. He believes in silence, in control, and in pretending he’s perfectly fine. Then his brother’s engagement drags him to a sun-drenched Italian villa filled with old friends, too much wine, and one man he’s spent two years trying very hard not to think about.
James Potter once blurred every line that friendship was supposed to hold. Then he left, and Regulus taught himself how to live without him. Now, two years later, they are sitting across the table, laughing in the same sunlight that used to fall across Regulus’ sheets.
What follows is a series of late-night confessions, soft mornings, and the kind of ache that never really fades.
