He heard the sound of Naruto hooting and cheering like someone emerging from a deep pool of water after a long period submerged below: jarring and sudden. Naruto, the Kazekage’s own siblings, and Sakura’s other yearmates clapped and at least attempted some level of enthusiasm but most people in the audience simply applauded with bare politeness. Feeling the tremble that vibrated through Sakura’s body, Gaara kept his face mild rather than revealing the reflexive grimace that wanted to show itself in his face.

Summary

All the shinobi she'd failed on her last mission would be her reminder, her motivation, that she had to persevere and become better. She couldn't allow such failure ever again. Sasuke, Naruto, even Kakashi-sensei… they'd left because she wasn't strong enough to hold them together. They didn't see the potential in her, but that didn't matter. She'd prove them all wrong. She'd show them all.

Kakashi really wanted to finish reading that journal. He still couldn't believe he had a whole book full of his mother's words. He was eager to read them, but apprehensive. He was the last living Hatake, and he'd spent most of his life ignoring the implications of that.
