A draughty camp, twelve hostile Practicals, a flock of half-starved, lice-ridden convicts and a Superior who predicted he wouldn’t last a month.
Glokta’s mood didn't improve when he heard the reason for his predecessor's retirement.
"Strangled in his bed, Inquisitor," Practical Severard said with smiling eyes, "didn't they tell you?"
"Must have forgotten to mention it," Glokta said. I may have to ask a few questions if I don't want to wake up with a pair of hands around my own throat.
And then there was the weather, tormenting his aching limbs.
"Why is it so damn cold?" Glokta spat.
Severard laughed. "You call this cold? Wait a month or two until the snow comes."
Glokta swallowed and licked his empty gums. Snow? How will I walk through snow with this sorry excuse for a leg? But I'll be damned if I crawl back to mother just yet...Bookmarked by Treegoats
